Modem for phone extremely hot

Is the modem for a landline supposed to be extremely hot

Modems can get warm with regular use, but if it's extremely hot to the touch, it could indicate a potential safety issue caused by things like poor ventilation or airflow, excessive power use or faulty hardware.

Check the modem’s placement.  Make sure it's not covered, near a heat source, or in a tight place without a sufficient airflow.  If the problem persists, you can take the modem to a local Cox store and replace it.  Contact Cox directly at cox.help@cox.com for further assistance.

I'm having the same issue.  Modem gets very hot to the touch.  What is going on?  This never happened with the previous modem, the little flat box.  I have the Panoramic Wi-Fi modem they made us all switch to not long ago.

Hi. Modems do get hot to the touch because they don't have a fan that cools them down, and they are powered on 24/7. The best thing to do is to make sure that the modem isn't in a closet or enclosed if at all possible. This will allow the air around it to keep it from getting scorching hot.  Thanks, -Lisa

@LisaH​ The modem is sitting on a table in the open, not in a closet or enclosed area.  It's still getting VERY hot.  This should not be normal and I'm afraid it's a fire hazard.
