Outlook for Mac Email problem after Cox maintenance

I have Outlook for Mac2011 on a MacBook Pro.  This morning my Outlook stopped working. When I went into the Cox website they said they were doing maintenance.  Since then, my Outlook won't work although my iPad is fine.  I was in the Cox chatroom for over an hour and they can't fix the problem.  Anyone else have this issue?

I am having the same problem - Mac2011 Outlook won't work.   I can access email through webmail - but nothing since 11:20pm last night on my Outlook.

I'm also having issues with receiving emails on my Mac.  This must be something Cox is doing because others are having a problem too.  I can send, but can not receive.  This also just happened.

Very interesting.  Based on your post,  I discovered I can send email as well.  That tells me it is a POP connection issue.

Hi LPalmer, are you still experiencing issues with our email server? If you are able to send and receive emails on myemail.cox.net without any issues, can you please change your password on the cox website, http://bit.ly/2KOrZnd, and ensure the password matches both the incoming and outgoing settings? Please also ensure the server settings are correct, http://bit.ly/2KGsVKh, and that you are using TLS, if available. -Kevin M. Cox Support Forum Moderator

I agree-it's a POP problem. I receive all emails via IMAP on an iPad, iMac and an android smartphone. I use both Microsoft Outlook 2011 and 2016 on my Mac and I can't receive using either one with POP. I can receive on either one using IMAP

Update:  i was on the phone with Technical Support this morning and they are aware of the problem; HOWEVER they do not why it is occurring and recommended contacting Microsoft.  I was told by the Cox technical engineer that It appears the issue is just with Outlook for Mac 2011 and not the later versions.  One solution for 2011 is to delete the account and open a new one although they were not confident how long that would last.  I ended up purchasing Office for Mac 2016 which includes Outlook, Word, Excel and Powerpoint for $79.  Once prompted for my account particulars, Outlook automatically connected into Cox and my emails downloaded.  The 2016 version for the server has IMAP/POP and automatically did its thing including picking the port values.  So one approach is to upgrade.  Take care though.  I could not upgrade to 2019 SW since my MacBook has the El Capitan OS as the latest and last for my dated MacBook Pro and that can't support the latest Microsoft 2019 products.   Good luck with whatever approach you choose.

Thanks for the update.   I did the same and upgraded and now everything is back working.

I can't believe that the only solution to not receiving emails is to upgrade my outlook.  Cox has done something to make our outlook unable to receive emails.  You'd think that the techs would know what that was and fix it.  Please cox, fix the issue or let us know what to do.  Everybody with Outlook 2011 that's having issues is because something on Cox's end has changed.  Thank you for your help.

JTA, on myemail.cox.net, are you able to send and receive emails? Using one email address, can you please send yourself a test email on myemail.cox.net, to see if you can send and receive emails? If you are able to send and receive emails on myemail.cox.net without any issues, please change your password on the Cox website, http://bit.ly/2KOrZnd. Once the password is changed, please ensure the password matches both the incoming and outgoing settings.

Cox made changes to our email server back in April, to ensure the safety and security of customer privacy information. Cox no longer supports sending email through email clients using SSL security encryption version 3.0 or older. SSL / TLS encrypts information from potential thieves as it is sent from one location to another, such as when sending email messages. Choosing to encrypt with SSL / TLS provides added security to email. -Kevin M. Cox Support Forum Moderator

I've tried the changing of the password.  That did not work. Problem is definitely with incoming mail.  Please advise next steps.

Yes, I am getting the following using both Outlook 2011 AND Outlook 2016 on the Mac:

"Connection to the server failed or was dropped." + "Could not retrieve mail.

Account name: "<account name>"

I too am having problems with Outlook not receiving email since 12/5/2019. I spent a long time in the chatroom. The agent kept trying to upsell me to a support protection plan-Cox Complete Care. He couldn't help me.

I have the same problem with my Mac11 Outlook that occurred at the same time.  Cox tech support won't help and says it is a Microsoft issue.

Not a Microsoft issue - nothing changed on the Microsoft side of the problem.  Clearly a cox issue.  They either stopped supporting something (which means we''re stuck with the upgrade problem), or they broke something on Dec 5 (the more likely answer)

I am also having this problem.  I've been getting "An unknown error has ocurred in Outlook" when I try to receive mail.  Error code 150.  Sending mail works, ironically.  After completely deleting and re-installing (thinking it was an Outlook problem), I still have the problem.  Outlook is not broken - I added my gmail account, and it works just fine.

Clearly Cox did something on December 5 that broke POP email retrieval using Outlook 2011 for Mac.  It's Sunday today - tech support closed.  Will call them tomorrow.

Anybody have any luck fixing this yet?

A little more research - Outlook 2011 uses SSL v2.  Note from tech (KevinM2)  below says Cox changed to requiring SSL more recent than v3.  But he says they changed back in April.  Doesn't really explain why this problem started for all of us on Dec 5 ... if what KevinM2 says is accurate, it should have stopped working in April.

The problem occurs in both Outlook 2011 for Mac and Outlook 2016 for Mac since 12/5/2019 and as far as I can see, COX does not allow receiving POP email. I don't think this has anything to do with what "changes" COX claims to have made sometime back in April 2019.

Interesting.  Also - I can't seem to get IMAP to work using Outlook 2011 either.  Seems like that ought to work.  Perhaps it's the same SSL version-too-old problem.

Pop still works with Cox.  My iPhone (running latest iOS) is configured for my cox email using Pop.  My guess: iOS uses a recent enough version of SSL, and Outlook 2011's SSL v2 is now "not supported".

Hi Kim, Cox no longer supports sending email through email clients using SSL security encryption version 3.0 or older. This is to ensure the safety and security of your private information, and Apple uses SSL / TLS encryption. Here is some additional information about our email server settings:

Lobu, if you're exclusively using IMAP, have you removed the Cox email from your client device entirely, and re-entered the credentials? I highly recommend doing so and starting from scratch. Please also verify your server settings as well, and here's some more information about POP and POP3 settings:

I agree, it's outrageous that a company like Cox doesn't have the technical expertise to fix their own email problem.  It's evident that they did something on December 5th and sadly nobody knows what it was.  Come on Cox, do something to fix this, or at least explain intelligently what was done to stop us from receiving emails on outlook.

Im having the same problem with outlook 2011.  Cant receive and error code 150.

Cox seems to have no clue on how to fix this.  Im ready to dump cox if they dont fix the problem.  Im not upgrading office because of a cox failure.

Unfortunately, this fix is for Windows computers and there doesn't seem to be a readily available similar fix for Macs. Also "blackeneth" indicates he's using IMAP for email. Most if not all the problems discussed in this topic refer to POP receiving problems mostly on Macs. Sad that COX has done nothing to explain or address this issue and like so many issues, this one will probably die here as well, forcing affected users to either switch to IMAP or change their email clients.

Hi Lobu, we generally do not provide support for email client servers, aside from instructions on setting up the email client, as well as information on server settings. At this time, we recommend contacting Outlook or Microsoft directly, for additional support. For POP settings, we recommend 995, with a TLS or SSL/TLS encryption. The security encryption version your email client uses is dependent upon your device operating system and email client versions. Please make sure your device's opearting system is up-top-date.

I have the same problem.  12/4/19 was the last date I recieved any mail on my MAC.  I still receive mail on my iphone.  I have an Outlook error code: 150. "An unknown error has occurred in Outlook. Could not retrieve mail." I can send mail fine.  My settings on my Cox account are "Incoming Server: pop.cox.net. Use SSL to connect (recommended)"

I called Cox tech for help and they said I had to sign up for their Complete Home Service or whatever its called for $10 a month.  Sounds like they caused a problem and now want to get all their customers to pay to have it remedied.  Doesn't smell right!! I did not sign up for the service.  Kevin, please find the answer for all of these faithful Cox customers, including myself.  Thank you.

@Hieb, what Outlook version are you currently using? Per Microsoft's website, Outlook for Mac 2011 is no longer compatible with macOS 10.15 Catalina.

As you've stated that you are able to receive emails on another client device, we recommend contacting Microsoft directly for support. -Kevin M. Cox Support Forum Moderator
