Why did Cox install a modem, connect it to my wireless router which gives me lower speeds than what l'm paying for? Doesn't Cox have a combination wireless modem/router which should give me faster speeds for my devices.

Yes, Cox does have a combination wireless modem/router called a gateway ... but ... it won't necessarily give you faster speeds. Installing a modem into your router eliminates any need to reconfigure all your devices for a new WiFi network but I would only be guessing what was in the installer's mind.
I prefer separate modems an routers as apposed to the all-in-one gateway. It gives you more flexibility. What model modem and router do you have? What speeds are you getting and what plan are you on?

How can I tell what WiFi devices are connected to my router ? I want to be able to block users accessing my network during a certain time frame in the day, without having to change my passcode

Sigcode, what router or gateway are you using? A list of connected devices may be in the Status tab but hard to say without knowing what device we are dealing with.
