Cable channel 49, WPXV in the Norfolk, VA area is now stating that I need a "box" to watch it. I only have two older "cable-ready" CRT TV sets, and though I think the low tier I'm paying for is still quite overpriced, I was satisfied with the channels I was getting until 2 days ago. Say anything you like about any of the newer sets, but I don't WANT one! I also don't want one of those nosy set-top boxes in my home either!
I don't care anywhere NEAR as much about picture quality as I do show quality, and that's nothing that Cox can control. My shows are great. "Other people's" shows are trash. I'm really just about ready to buy the best antenna I can get and give up cable for my TV viewing. No, I won't be dumping Moneybags, Inc. because I still use their (Ha-Ha) "highspeed internet" and their usually reliable home phone service.
To save myself time replying to a bunch of you technogeeks who want to riff on my equipment or viewing habits, here's my reply, straight from "Battlestar Galactica": FRAK you!

Why is it ONLY the ION channel that is saying (onscreen) that it now requires a set-top box to view it as of May 20? That is the only thing that has changed in the channel lineup on my TV sets. All that means to me is that I am now paying the same fee (including Recent Increases) for my chosen tier, but with one LESS channel available to view. Hence, the attached tag.

You will soon (May 20?) require a STB to view any programming as Cox transitions to an all-digital format. The first one or two mini-boxes are free. So, you will be getting far more channels for the same price. Hence, the attached tag.

According to whom? So far, May 23, not true except for the ION television channel. If you ARE correct, it will save me lots of $$$ to just dump the cable tv & get an antenna. I don't watch TV nearly as much as most of the people on this forum. I'm not picking on TV-philes. We all have our favorite time-consuming hobbies. It's just that TV is not one of mine. Also, again, if you're right, Cox has done nothing to inform me about this change. I'm quite sure they won't really miss my paltry $75 per month.

There hasn't been a release date for the All-Digital TV platform to launch in VA. Customers in the market will be informed as to prepare for the change to come as all Analog channels won't be supported. We're one of the last remaining Cable Companies to offer analog video service. This change to Digital is going to free up more bandwidth and allow for more possibilities of entertainment. You're seeing ION is only available as a digital channel. Each TV in the home requires a digital receiver with a CableCard to view this channel and other digital channels in your lineup. Our Solution Stores have Set Top Boxes (STBs) available for rent at $8.50 per box. If you wanted to devote the main TV to support ION, you may rent 1 box for 1 TV to carry those Digital Channels. Once Video goes All Digital in the VA Market, we'll offer our customers the choice to rent Mini Boxes (about the size of a sandwich) to view Digital Channels for less than half the cost of the STB monthly rental fee.

Have a nice nap, Mr. Van Winkle? Cox's transition from analog to digital is hardly a secret.
