Hi, the IR port, along with the USB and Ethernet ports are not active on the Cisco Explorer 4742HDC High Definition Receivers.

Do you know where the IR sensor itself is on the front of the receiver? I poked around google but was unable to find any documentation.

On the left side of the front panel. Shine a flashlight on the front panel and you will see a round bubble. That is the ir sensor.
