Webmail deleting emails

About a month ago or so my webmail started "deleting" emails out of my inbox. They're not in my trash folder or my inbox. Does anyone know where these emails go? Are they lost forever? I am so technologically challenged!

I have an iPhone and an iPad that are both hooked up to my Cox email. And i know that if I delete an email from either device...it deletes it from the other device as well as my webmail. But in the past, I was always able to retrieve older emails from my webmail...even after they stopped appearing on my iPhone or iPad. Does anyone know if I can change this setting in webmail or something?  Thanks in advance for any assistance!!

In short; No.

In the past you probably used POP3 to connect your devices, and by default they just download the email, instead of syncing the inboxes together. Now you probably use IMAP which means anything you do on one device, syncs to ALL devices, including webmail. The only work around I can think of is set up a rule to forward a copy of all your email to another email address and use that as backup? Or just configure your devices to move deleted items to the trash folder instead of just deleting them outright. I can give instructions on these, but first want to know if you want to take it that far.

You're describing IMAP behavior. When a mail is deleted on one device, it deletes all all devices including webmail. The forwarding is a good idea, that will send a copy of the email to a different address (gmail, yahoo, whatever).

What a pain! I saw the option about forwarding to another email address when I was looking around on the settings on webmail. Having to do that totally defeats the purpose of having my Cox email address though :( but it looks like it's the only way to to save my emails from going out into LaLa Land!

Yes I would love if you could tell me how to set that rule up. Like I said, I saw where to go, but I want to make sure I do it right or I'll be right back here asking for more help!

Now I need to go create a new yahoo or gmail account.
Thanks again for your help!!

Well you could just create another Cox email address. You can have up to 5-10 I think depending on your plan. Not sure how up to date this is, but here are some instructions on adding a email address. Maybe just call it XXXXbackup where XXX is your current email.

Sure. Once in webmail, click on "Settings" up along the top. Then clicking on "Forwarding" on right hand side, 2nd from top. Enter in your new email in the empty field and click "Forward and keep a copy " then click "OK" on the bottom. This will also create a backup if you delete something by accident. Just keep in mind you might have to go into this extra email every once in a while and delete stuff you don't need or else it might fill up. Then again that depends on how often you get email. Let me know if you have any questions.

Adding extra cox emails is a good idea. You can even use extra cox emails for "disposable" email addresses, if you want to have an anonymous email to use on forums, online purchases, etc, that isn't tied to your main email address. Sometimes that's a good way to find out if a site is selling your email address too, if you start getting unsolicited email in the address and you KNOW you only used that disposable address at one or two websites. Easy to track who's being honest about their privacy policy (a big concern of all of us these days). And, you can simply remove the email address when you're done with it, and replace it with a different one. One for a backup forwarder catchall, one or more for disposable, one sacred email that only your closest friends and family know.

If you don't want emails deleted from the server when deleting on a device you could try setting up all of your devices to use POP access.  More on that can be found here:
