Trying to record on a VCR
I still use a VCR to record shows. I recently installed the mini-box required by Cox and now it appears I am unable to record with the vcr. The VCR comes on like it is recording, but when I go to watch the recorded show,there is no picture or sound, like nothing recorded (I record over the previous day, and that has been wiped out). How do I fix this? I have Coax running from the wall to the box, from the box to the vcr and from the vcr to the tv. The VCR is Sony SLV-679 HF.
Thank you for any help you can provide. I'm sure someone has answered this question before, but I did not want to sift through hundreds of posts.

This setup can work however you'll need to be sure you're setting the VCR to record either channel 3 or 4 (whichever you have the mini-box set to output on) and leave the mini-box tuned to the channel you want to record.

So are you saying I cannot watch another show while the VCR is recording? My husband is usually home and he does not want to watch the shows I am recording. What about if no one is home, I don't want to leave the TV on all day.

Yes. Before you could use a tuner without encryption, which meant you could use the tuner in your VCR AND TV at the same time. Now since encryption, neither tuner will work, and only the one in the mini box will work. Since only 1 tuner, you can only record/watch one thing at a time unless you use a splitter and two mini boxes.

What Tecknowhelp said is basically correct. The TV doesn't need to be on to record however the VCR is a legacy technology that is not compatible with digital signals. The mini-box addresses this limitation however all channel changes have to be done via the mini-box.
