Speeds of 2mbs when I am paying for 18, this is frustrating.

I am using the cox speed test and getting speeds of 2mbs down and 5mbs up. I am paying for 18 down. (preferred Orange County)

I have been unable to watch youtube videos in 1080p which prompted me to check my speed. I was shocked to find I was getting 2, yes 2mbs on the speed test.

I have plugged into the modem directly and bypassed the router, it did not help.

This is a copy paste from http://192.168.100.1

How can I get my speed back up to the advertised level?

I live on Fallingstar street in Irvine to give you a sense of my area, if it is indeed an area based problem.

Thank you for the quick reply. I don't have a splitter.

I tried the suggestions you offered and ran a new test, I am now getting just under 7mbs download. (not prime-time, will test again at prime-time)

While this is an improvement, I'm trying to find a way to get close to the 18mbs speed.

I have the same problems late evenings and weekend. I also have DSL because cox is not dependable. My dsl works great with You tube when cox isn't working like it should. Funny how 6 MB DSL is better then 15 sometime MB from cox. They keep sending tech out here but till they upgrade my area, DSL is a better Provider. Once at&t u-verse gets in my area, I may go with them completely.

Why are you posting this? I don't understand. Are you the OP re-registered? And your saying turning off QoS on your router helped? Or are you someone else? And what is this about buying parts out of a van?

In general, I have to say alot of it is actually bad advice. Adding a second router and just disabling the DHCP will still leave it above layer 2 on the OSI model. What you would need is a access point. Also, 5Ghz is generally only suggested for same room or line of site wireless. The higher frequencies doesn't penetrate walls, and can cause issues.

I don't understand why others are posting their issues here, I was just looking to get some help from Cox. (I'm too busy to call in)

I know, I didn't understand either. Sometimes people will post then re-register with a new name and then reply to their posts, so I was just making sure it wasn't that.

In general your signal levels look good and I doubt its congestion, so I think something else is going on. What test are you using to see your speed? The youtube speed test thing? The one in your Cox internet tools? Speedtest.net? Because Youtube has been a separate issue all together, so I am trying to think outside the box.

I'm using the Cox tester and testmy.net.

That is pretty unusual. Well lets see if we can first find where the problem is. Try this;

Windows Key + R > CMD > Type tracert google.com > Right click top of command window > Edit select all > Enter

Then you should be able to paste it here. That will show if its packet loss or latency issue.

@DurfDiggler I read very carefully, I just disagree.Turning off DHCP isn't the only thing you need to turn off on a router to make it a AP. There is still NAT, SPI, QoS, etc. Actually, using a router in such a way would have a substantial negative effect on overall throughput and would cause networking issues problematic too. Also, you insult a Cox technician for not knowing that your equipment was causing the problem? Why should he/she? If anything you should be sorry for having so many Cox technician out to your house when it ended being a issue with your equipment. JMHO.

My point is it is considered rude to post unrelated problems in someone else thread. Its the technological equivalent of cutting in line. Public forum or not, thats basic forum etiquette. That is the last I will say on the topic inside this thread.

@ Kosomoto Trace looks normal, so it rules that out.

1. What model modem do you have? You can either look for a sticker on the bottom of the modem, or it will be listed somewhere on the 192.168.100.1 page. Probably something like a DARxxx or DPQxxxx.

2.Have you tried more then one computer direct to modem?

3. Try this speedtest. Click on location closest to you. You may have to update Java, then allow on any prompts that come up. Click "Click to start test". Once the test is done click on "Analyze Your results" link above test. Copy and paste everything below. For comparison.

Test Type: Application Speed

I tried a new $200 router and I was having the same problems. I went through all the same bs you're going through right now.  Whatever.

That rules out flash as a issue. I think the most telling is the Bandwidth. That should be higher, and while I couldn't get a technical definition in their glossary, I think that speaks about the speed of the route. Think highway speed vs side street speed.

I would say this is either a neighborhood wide issue, a PC issue. When was the last time you did a test and got a good results? Also, any recent software changes? Last, what does your network consists of? Just router and laptop?
