It seems that at 6am I get 25Mbps but at 9pm I get 3Mbps. I tested it with speedtest.net, with and without the router (direct from modem to laptop, all wired). My modem is an SB docsis 2 and I'm getting a Cisco 3010 docsis 3 next week. Hopefully this will fix the speed issue. A Tech came last month, checked all cables, signals are good. He suggested upgrading the modem. My service is Preferred package. I don't play games or xbox or stream stuff, just vpn to my work.
Q1 can someone explain the speed variation to me by time of day? do I need to be moved to another segment?
Q2 do I need to call Support when I plug in the 3010?
I also have frequent disconnects, I read the other posts in the forum ... no solution yet.
Thanks, Paul

For anyone on Preferred or above, changing to DOCSIS 3 is becoming part of the speed troubleshooting process. If you had a Cox-owned modem, they'd have done it right there. Since it's customer-owned, they just had to suggest it. So for question 1, basically switching to DOCSIS 3 is changing to another 'segment,' so to speak.
For question 2, if you hook it up to your computer directly and don't have a static DNS set, you should get the self-activation page immediately. (Going through a router or having a static DNS can sometimes interfere with the self-registration system.) If you have any problems with that or if you'd prefer not to try it then you would need to call tech support to provision it.
The disconnect problem could well be that the modem itself is starting to show its age, since you got it before I even started working here (though only by about a year, I have been here long enough to know this stuff ) it could be flaking out in ways we can't even diagnose from here.
