slower speeds out of nowhere

I have preferred internet and have always gotten the 50Mbps promised. However, I recently noticed some lagging when it came to streaming HD video that hasn't happened before, so these past few days I have been checking my download speed and for some reason it's less than half that now (21-23). Sometimes, though, it's lower than TEN. I'm trying really hard to not be extremely angry about this but Cox just raised the base rates for our service last month so it's hard. I haven't changed my router or modem at all recently. What could be the problem here?

Hi msep88, remove the router and unplug its power cord. Take the ethernet cable you have coming from the modem and connect it to the laptop/PC directly, so you have the modem directly connected to the computer. Unplug the power cord from the modem and shut down the PC so that it is completely off (not a restart). After everything is shut down, check all the remaining cable connections to make sure they are at least finger tight. Plug the power cord back in the modem and wait at least two minutes, then turn the computer back on. Wait for the computer to finish loading its programs, then run a speed test and post the results here for review.
