Slow internet

Have the premier package but have been getting down into the 29-30 Mbps down and 5 Mbps up range lately. That is just a little over half the speed I am supposed to be getting and these numbers were taken late at night off of peak hours. It frequently will stall out when trying to view videos from various sources and have to wait for it to "buffer" for a while. My modem is a few years old, don't know if a new one would help or not, but seen some people getting help on here so I figured I would try.

First thing I notice is you have a older DOCSIS 2.0 phone modem, what model is it? Your typically not going to see above what your seeing (and usually caps out at 23Mbps) from a DOCSIS 2.0 modem. Good news is the upgrade to a DOCSIS 3.0 phone modem should be free.  You will just need a technician to come out to your house to swap. When they do, make sure they also change the service code on your account to allow you to get the D3 Premier speeds.

Edit: Didn't notice the other reply.

I'm not a tech nor do I work for cox but I believe i see the issue. Your modem seems to be using DOCSIS 2.0 which caps out around the speeds you are seeing. If your modem is not capable of DOCSIS 3.0 you will never see your advertised speeds and may need to upgrade.

The speeds you are seeing for the modem are about as good as you can expect with the older Docsis 2.0 modem, assuming the levels don't change with the Docsis 3.0 modem you would probably see a 15 to 20 Mbps increase on downloads swapping the modem. And being it is a MTA/phone modem we can do that for you. If you can email us at cox.help@cox.com with a link the forum post and the street address we can set that up for you.

And this upgrade is free? No service charge or anything?

Cox doesn't charge for modems that also handle phone service while there is active phone service on the account so there would be no charge to swap out the modem.  Once a DOCSIS 3.0 modem is on the account we can change the service code if necessary still to get you on the newer Premier service.
