I switched my tv package from hdtv to tv essentials and now I cannot program my remote control. Do I need to change my box or remote?

Changing your TV package should not have any effect on programming your remote. Are you having trouble with the remote working with the box or TV? What type of remote are you currently using?

I have a URC-8820-Cisco remote control. My remote will not program with the box.

Take a look at the back of the remote and note the instructions for Cisco and Motorola under the model number, set it for the type of cable box you have, them complete the instructions listed on the battery cover.

I have done that several times. I have tried a new remote. Nothing works.

Can you explain how this change took place? Did you get a new box? New remote? New TV? If only the programming changed, I don't see how it would effect your remote at all. It would be like getting HBO and your toaster not working.

Essential service doesn't use a cable box. You will need to turn in your receiver and connect the cable straight from the wall to the receiver. Also, the Cox remote will not work to change the channels on the TV. You can get a universal remote from stores like Walmart or Target.

Not to step one toes, but won't this cause a issue when the market goes all encrypted and they have no box?
Also, can't the remote's channel buttons be remapped? Not sure what remote OP has, but if its the new light up black one, see here for instructions.
I think more info is required from poster. What box, what remote, what TV, etc.

Ahhh, thank you for the clarification. Helps me better help others. Nice catch!
Maybe they could trade the DVR for a mini box? That way they still have a remote and would prepare them for a change. Just a thought. Guess its up to the OP. Thanks for putting up with me.
