Because last night's episode of Breaking Bad ran slightly over 1 hour, my DVR cut off and missed the last 1 - 2 minutes. As this is not the first time for this issue, what determines when a recorded program stops? Perhaps this is an apples & oranges comparison, but if my DVR can distinguish between new and rerun programs, it seems as if capturing an entire broadcast should not be that hard.
Is my only option to record several additiional minutes for EVERY program to ensure that I capture an entire show?

Your DVR stops/starts, tells if a program is new/repeat, etc., based upon the data supplied in the program guide, which is provided by a third party. If the programmer is providing wrong data to the IPG data provider, or if the IPG data provider is giving the guide false data, there is nothing the DVR can do about it. I noticed that many of the times were bad for AMC's Breaking Bad marathon. The very end of many episodes would show up at the beginning of the next episode on my DVR. Not much you can do about it, short of "padding" the end of each episode.
