Phone and fax setup

recently had a home phone added to my cox plan . Want to use it as a fax line also. The phone plugs into the cable box they brought me and it has two phone ports but neither the phone or fax work on the second port. The epson workforce 2650 says to plug the fax into the phone wall outlet so that was not helpful. How do I use the phone and the fax on the same line with a distinct ring for the fax.?

The "cable box" your telephone is currently plugged into is a digital telephone modem.  The digital telephone modem should be connected from its Port 1 to the wall.  You would then connect your telephones, fax, answering machine, call blockers, etc to other wall outlets throughout your home.

The telephone wiring behind your walls is all connected.  When you connect your digital telephone modem to a telephone wall outlet, everything (telephones, fax, answering machine, call blockers) is all connected to it for service.

Just to add, the distinctive ring (D-Ring) features adds a number that makes your phone ring in a certain way. Usually 2 long rings then one short. If you want to find out, call your D-Ring number from a cell phone and listen to your phone ring. Your fax machine then has to be set to only pick up on that special ring. How that is done depends on the fax. What fax machine do you have?

Also, if you want the fax in the same room as the "box" or telephone modem, you can get a line splitter. There are many kinds, here is one. You can buy one at any Walmart or hardware store. That would plug into the back of the modem, Line 1, and then your fax would connect into 1 port on splitter and line from spitter to wall on port 2.
