Phoenix-area email problems.

Started January 28 and continuing thru February 11. Same old "server problem".  My email (POP) shows an Error icon. I get the dialog box "The POP server rejected the password for user ____. Please re-enter your password".  Of course, re-entering the password does not fix the problem.

The problem is intermittent. Cox technicians have explained that they are having problems with the servers.  They helped me to reset all of the settings in my email program to the correct ports. That didn't change anything.

The problem is mainly with receiving emails. There is a delay until the server problem clears. I can send emails. I don't check my online account because i seldom use it.

Cox Moderators, please don't respond to this thread. There is nothing you can do to fix it.  The Cox Tier 2.5 techs have been very nice.

I just want to report the problem so the community is informed.  Otherwise, everyone wonders if they are the only one experiencing the problem.  Sometimes i can get the problem to clear by hitting the GET MAIL button or by closing my mail program and re-opening it. Other times that does not work. I just have to wait 2 minutes or 2 hours until my emails arrive.

Accepted Solution

I don't think the two are related FYI. Cox forum isn't even hosted on Cox but @ Rackspace.com. I am going to guess and say the site was also built by a  contractor, since there are .css errors up the wazoo.  See here for more info on Rackspace bottleneck issues. Good news is upgrades are coming, or at least will be available.

I think the email errors  are from the authentication server being backed up. I wonder if there is a way to force pop.cox.net to geo-locate to a different server. Kind of miss the days when pop.west.cox.net and pop.east.cox.net were seperate to help isolate issues like this.

:;Edit:: forums.cox.com is having loading problems as I type this. Hope this even posts. ::le sigh::

I'm in Tucson and I've been having email problems since Thanksgiving. For the past two days, the specific problems have included:

  1. delayed incoming emails
  2. a total inability to send emails from my email client (server offline, resetting password doesn't work, etc.)
  3. webmail taking forever to receive and send (if you can get the page to load at all)

I don't care how nice the techs have been. Somebody needs to get this fixed once and for all. I won't hold my breath.

File a complaint with the FCC.  Cox 'has been working on this' since before Thanksgiving.  Nobody is that incompetent.  They are just ignoring the problem.

Same thing here, been since somewhere October/November. VERY annoying. I work from home, have my Outlook open all day, and the message pops up several times an hour. The generic 0x800CCC92 error with the additional server error response: Error states "The server responded: -ERR mail storage services unavailable, wait a few minutes and try again."

Same problem here in Omaha since last October!  "Mail can't connect to account XXXX. Enter the password for XXX"

It was much better Monday and Tuesday of this week (I actually thought that it might be fixed), now yesterday and today, it's worse than ever.

I also have been having the very same problems since November.  It was only when I read the forum here back in late December that I learned I wasn't the only one even though Cox told me it was a problem on my end.  Things finally seemed to resolve late January but just this morning I got the same error message.  I knew it was too good to be true that the problem was fixed.

I am the original poster.  I don't want to belabor this topic. Cox will get it fixed someday (they know about the server problem and have tried resetting them... which helped for a while).  I am having the same problem again today Feb 12th.  Same dialog box popping up that my password was rejected. I have been lucky .... i can get the emails to appear by hitting the GET MAIL button on my mail program.

I am the Original Poster. The problem is happening again February 16.  It usually occurs from 10am to 2pm Phoenix time; altho it is not limited to those times.

When the problem occurs, i am unable to get into this Forum. The site won't load. I have no idea if the problems are related but they usually are concurrent.  I have absolutely zero problem getting into any other website except this forum. I can get into webmail.

This will be my last post on this thread. Unless someone figures out what is going on.

Health Edge, your posts are consistently excellent.  Your contributions are appreciated.  I didn't know about rackspace.

Thanks for the edit.....i am not the only one having problems loading the forum today.

Thank you for this post. I've started having this same problem in the past couple of weeks. It confirms that it is a Cox problem and not a problem with my Mac.

Has been happening for months. I don't know why moderator is pretending this is a new issue. Some research on this very forum with IMAP or POP or Outlook will yield plenty of results with the same symptoms reported. But Cox and their employees continue to pretend it is the user's fault. I have been told to modify connection latency , to dump the east/west virtual regional name as it was no longer supported. I have re-installed Outlook, I installed Thunderbird. Same outcome. I have the same problem with Cox POP on another PC with a different version of Outlook 14.0.7143.5000 (64 bit) It fails to authenticate about 20 times a day. Some days less and some other days (rarely) no failure. I have been in I.T. for almost 20 years and I know without a doubt that this issue is not user related. In truth, I just live with it. My contract has another 9 months or so. After 25 years, I will dump Cox like an old tranny on the freeway , never to come back.

I totally agree with your post BUT there is a way to get better service.  Go to the FCC website (www.fcc.gov) and file an online complaint.  You will then get a phone call from the Cox Corporate office who will arrange for your email account to be transferred to a server on the East Coast that doesn't have as severe an email problem.  I did this about a month ago and my service has become much better.

Thank you for the advice and for the answer. I might file a complaint but I will no longer pay for substandard services provided by Cox. I have had it.

Whaaa? What would the FCC have to do with a email problem? Even if Cox was doing it on purpose FCC has no pull with that. Maybe the BBB but I think even that is a little severe. Heck, they even put up a page saying they don't.
