No dialtone
I replaced my older modem with an updated one from the cox store. Ever since I have not been able to get a dialtone on my phone. I plug it into the back of the modem and I receive a dialtone however when I plug the tel cord from the modem into the tel wall, socket to back feed into my house all I get is a humming sound. What also is crazy is once last week I picked up,the phone had a dialtone and was able to call out but when I picked up,the phone five minutes later it was back,to its no dialtone mode. If you get dialtone directly from the back of the modem, but don't on your phone jacks after connecting the eMTA (phone modem) to the house wiring at the same port the issue is not the modem. There may be an issue with a line, jack or handset though.
Start by disconnecting all devices from the phone jacks in the house and leaving them unplugged for at least 2 minutes to clear the line. This includes fax machines, caller ID boxes, all telephones, computers and any monitors that use your phone lines for communication. Once this has been done, ensure your eMTA is reconnected to its jack, then reconnect handsets one at a time, checking each for dial tone. This will help narrow down where the problem is.
Here's a support article to help you out. http://www.cox.com/residential/support/phone/guidedhelp.cox?articleId=5f5d1530-d6c6-11e1-d920-000000000000
If troubleshooting does not correct the problem or identify a particular jack or handset as the culprit it may be necessary to schedule a technician to visit your home.
