I live in Northern VA, Herndon specifically. I just quit FiOS after 7-8 years..(however long theyve been here) and just this past week completed the installation of Cox Premier Internet (this is the only product I have from Cox).
I live at the end of a shared pipe-stem driveway and when they came to do the activation realized they had no cable in ground from the curbbox to my house, so the guy came to the door and said he would schedule getting the cable laid. Few days later, the guys came and put the cable in the ground and left a 3-4 section coming out of the ground ... with no connector on the end. I assumed when they installer came back out, he would activate the service on the street and put a connector the house end, he did not, he did something down at the curb and left, and it took me a couple of days to get them back out to install the connector (I was going to install it myself but its an RG-11 (underground) cable and those connectors were not available at Lowes or Home Depot...besides... seems to me that is their plant and they should do it.. but I digress)... So a day or two later, guy comes out, installs connector, 5 minutes he's gone. Just to be clear.. NO ONE has set foot in my house. I connect the outside cable to my in house cable, hook up my Arris modem I purchased on Amazon, after a few minutes call Cox support for them to check me out, and I have internet.
Brings us to today... got my first bill... with 2 puzzling line items...
Internet Self Activation Kit --- $30
Professional Installation --- $60
What is a "self activation kit"? I never received any package from COX and supplied all the inside hardware myself.
And do they consider the installation of their plant, "Professional Installation" that I should pay for? If so, then I assume when I sell the house they are perfectly fine with my pulling out that in ground cable... since I paid for it.

Im not sure, because I don't know much about Cox's billing side of things, but it looks like you paid for a Self installation, but then that didn't work, since you didn't have a drop going to your house, so a technician was required. That technician laying the drop and connecting at the house box, was what created the Professional Install. I assume that house never had Cox service before (unless someone dug up the line) so it should never been set up as a self install to start with. That's Cox's bad, unless you pushed for it. At the very least I think the 30$ should be waived, if not other compensation, but I will leave that to their billing department. You should call them. This forum is more for the technical side of things.

Yep, you got billed for something you shouldn't have. Call billing to resolve it.
