For over a year I have had an issue with my connection where a connected service, such as Ventrillo, various online games, streaming media, or Skype will remain connected and continue to send and recieve data as normal with no interuption or slowdown. However, when I try to establish a new connection, be it logging into a game, moving from one youtube video to the next, changing tracks on Pandora, or trying to load a website I am unable to connect to the internet randomly. I can surf the web for hours with no problem at all and suddenly I click to go to the next page of the website I am on and now my browser tells me I am not connected to the internet.
Keep in mind that my browser is telling me I am not connected when I am still talking to people on Vent and still streaming music in another tab. The failure to find the internet can last from 30-seconds to several minutes, in which time I do not lose connection to already established connections like my online games or Voip services. This issue effects all the devices attached to my gateway, which was recently purchased brand new from Cox (In an attempt to solve this very same problem). That would be 2 custom build PCs less than 1 year old connecting via wire, 1 8-year old laptop connecting via wireless, 2 smartphones via wireless and 1 Roku player via wireless.
I had chalked the issue up to something on my end untill I recently learned that other people in my area were having the same problem. A friend in my same apartment complex, but in a different building is having the same issue using different hardware (Modem + Router instead of a gateway).
Can anyone give me a reason why I don't loose connection to my Voip or games but am told there is not interent connection when trying to go to Google.com?

No, I am not seeing increased latency or any type of audio delay on Vent (or other programs). The only indication that the problem is happening is when I actually try to go to a web site. It does tend to happen more often in the evenings and weekends, when I would assume local traffic is heavier. I am not at home right now so I can not provide all the information but on a few occasions I tried to run a tracert while the issue was happening and it timed out, but completed normaly when the connection was working properly.

Just out of curiosity, try setting your DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 or any 3rd party DNS you desire. Here are instructions. You can set the DNS static on just one PC that way when the problem happens on one PC thats normal, you can check the other PC that has the DNS settings.
Other then that, I would also agree it could be a firewall issue. What gateway do you have? On some it's possible to turn down the detection severity to help with issues like that.

I tried setting my DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as a backup last night. I noticed a huge decrease in loading times for most websites instantly. I did have one less than 30 second eppisode of "You are not connected to the internet", I will do more testing over the weekend to see if the problem persists or if changing the DNS makes any difference.

Over the last few days, after setting a custon DNS I am still randomly recieving "Not connected to the Interent" errors when trying to browse websites. My already connected services (Games, chat clients, VoIP) run with no lag or rubberbanding at all. I have tried using different browsers, IE, Firefox, and Chrome and I get the same issue with all of them.

The pattern of symptoms suggest to me that it's probably not the connection having problems so much as the application itself. Have you tried different browsers or different PCs/devices to see if you can duplicate the behavior that way?

Yes, as my previous posts have stated, this error occurs with multiple devices on multiple browsers. It is not just the internet browser that is having issues. If I am connected to something like Vent when the problem happens, vent will stay connected. However, if I am not connected when the problem starts and I try to connect, it is unable to find the server.

Over the last two weeks there has been no change in my connections behavior. Does anyone care to comment?

If applications are fast, but web browsing is not, probably something monitoring or bottlenecking port 80. What do you have as a Anti-virus? Have you tried disabling it?
Also, when the problem occurs, can you go Windows + R > CMD > Ping cox.net? You wouldn't have telnet enabled on your PC would you? That can be helpful to test with since you can specify port.
Last, you never answered what kind of modem/router/gateway you have.
