Lost channel 17 (TBS) when installed minibox; Fairfax VA

I installed 2 new miniboxes supplied by Cox in Fairfax Va. Now I no longer get channel 17 (TBS) on those TVs. I still get TBS on the TV that is just connected to the coax w/o any box. I have the lowest level TV pkg, TV Starter, and TBS is listed as one of my channels, and I have been getting it for years with no problem. I have called Cox and they have confirmed that I should get the channel. They sent 1 tech to my house, who found nothing wrong (he actually switched out my miniboxes and tried new ones). After another call, Cox sent a 2nd tech (tier 2?) who never arrived but called and told me that he had seen the problem before and none of the Cox miniboxes would receive TBS. So I called again, and Cox confirmed again that I should get TBS, and now are sending a 3rd tech. I have little reason to believe this 3rd tech is going to find anything the first 2 didn't.  I'd like to break this cycle and actually move forward to a resolution. Has anybody else had this problem?

What channel is the mini box tuning to? If your using HDMI, then the mini box will usually auto switch to the HD version of what ever channel your choosing. So if your on 17, try channel 1017, and visa versa. I think this is relevant because if you check the channel lineup for channel 1017(TBS HD) it has a astrick next to it which means:

"Channel not available on outlets connected via a mini box; requires either an Advanced TV Receiver, Contour Receiver or Cox-provided CableCARD"

So, looks like in your area with a mini box, you get TBS, but NOT TBS HD.

Hi Bill123,

Are all of the Mini Boxes skipping TBS 17 in your lineup and the guide, or are you getting a blue picture or a reference code?

http://media.cox.com/support/print_media/tv/cls/virginia/cl_fairfax.pdf  has no such notation for 17 or 1017 in the Starter tier.

All the mini boxes are skipping 17. It is not shown in the guide and cannot be accessed directly. There is no blue screen or ref code. This is true even after several resets by Cox remotely, and reset/rescans by the tech on-site.

I tried channel 1017 but that just takes me to the last actual channel I currently get which is one of the 900 music channels. Like you say, I wouldn't expect to get the HD version of TBS since the minibox does not get the HD channels. But it should get the SD version. I am connected via HDMI. Are you suggesting that I switch to the minibox coax connection? Guess I could try that.

I looked at the URL you mentioned - http://media.cox.com/support/print_media/tv/cls/virginia/cl_fairfax.pdf

I'm not sure what you are saying. I see both 17 TBS and 1017 TBS HD listed in the TV Starter tier. I know I won't get the HD version (1017) with the minibox, but I should get the SD version (17).

On the TV w/o the box, I receive 17/TBS. It appears the channel is being broadcast 480si. I do not have any HD receivers or DVRs

@Bill123

FYI the mini-box is an HD device.  To take advantage of that feature however it must be connected to the TV via HDMI.

Are you saying the non pdf channel line up is wrong? Can OP get other channels marked in the lineup I linked to? Also, if the channel line up is wrong, how can we get that corrected? We use that for other troubleshooting.

Hi Everyone,

I found and reported a discrepancy in the PDF channel lineups for NOVA and Hampton Roads yesterday. The PDFs are missing the '*' symbol designating channels not available via the mini box. The channel listing at www.cox.com/residential/tv/channel-lineup.cox displays the '*' symbol correctly.

I've asked our video team to confirm if TBS is included in the NOVA mini box lineup, and I'll update you as soon as I can. Thanks for bringing this to our attention!

Thank you for the clarification, but can you give a reason "why" the HD versions aren't included? And why just in some areas? Just 2 posts ago it was said it's a HD receiver. Whats the point of that if you can't get HD channels? Also, doesn't Cox get the SD and HD feed for the same price? If not, why were they including both over CATV with QAM? Feels like Cox is using the encryption as a opportunity to up-sell.

PROBLEM RESOLVED! Somebody did something. The 3rd tech showed up, rescanned the channels, and 17(TBS) was there.  I'm inclined to think the fix had something to do with this forum, (since 3 calls directly to Cox CS accomplished nothing. So, thanks to whomever.

Hi Bill123,

Thanks for the update about TBS showing for you on the On-Screen guide!
