I have this strange issue happening to me that I just noticed the last couple of days. Any IP I ping seems to have a latency spike every say 30 seconds or so. I did restart my modem and directly connect my computer and disconnect everything else that's using my internet. I have also tested from another computer and same issue is happening. I am not using wireless. I am also sure it is not malware or a virus or any other thing as I'm the only person who uses this internet connection.
This happens to each and every IP I try to ping.
Here is an example of pinging the 1st hop after my router:
Pinging 10.3.96.1 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 10.3.96.1: bytes=32 time=7ms TTL=254
Reply from 10.3.96.1: bytes=32 time=9ms TTL=254
Reply from 10.3.96.1: bytes=32 time=6ms TTL=254
Reply from 10.3.96.1: bytes=32 time=1533ms TTL=254
Reply from 10.3.96.1: bytes=32 time=6ms TTL=254
Reply from 10.3.96.1: bytes=32 time=7ms TTL=254
Reply from 10.3.96.1: bytes=32 time=6ms TTL=254
Ping statistics for 10.3.96.1:
Packets: Sent = 25, Received = 25, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 5ms, Maximum = 1533ms, Average = 67ms
Another example pinging cox.net:
Pinging cox.net [68.99.123.161] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 68.99.123.161: bytes=32 time=25ms TTL=56
Reply from 68.99.123.161: bytes=32 time=26ms TTL=56
Reply from 68.99.123.161: bytes=32 time=28ms TTL=56
Reply from 68.99.123.161: bytes=32 time=25ms TTL=56
Reply from 68.99.123.161: bytes=32 time=2011ms TTL=56
Reply from 68.99.123.161: bytes=32 time=26ms TTL=56
Reply from 68.99.123.161: bytes=32 time=26ms TTL=56
Reply from 68.99.123.161: bytes=32 time=25ms TTL=56
Reply from 68.99.123.161: bytes=32 time=28ms TTL=56
Reply from 68.99.123.161: bytes=32 time=26ms TTL=56
Ping statistics for 68.99.123.161:
Packets: Sent = 43, Received = 43, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 24ms, Maximum = 2011ms, Average = 71ms
My download and upload speeds are Ok and I don't think I have packet loss but this is affecting things like online gaming drastically. Can anyone help with this issue or do I have to directly call cox support for this?

Try pinging your modem at 192.168.100.1 when your getting the spikes. Or try pathping 10.3.96.1 which should show where the latency is occurring.

Health Edge, this is just random constant latency spike. It happens on any IP regardless where it is. I will try a pathping and paste it here.

If you get latency while pingining 192.168.100.1 when your getting latency to any other IP, then the problem is between your computers and the modem. Thats because 192.168.100.1 is the IP of your modem. Pathping helps because it measures latency and packet loss within a extended time, so it will more likely show the issue. However if the problem isn't occuring when you do any test, it won't give any pertinent data.

Sorry Health, I didn't mean to sound unappreciative. Any help is welcome and thank you.
I tried to ping my router's IP and same behavior occurs!
What would that mean? Something is going on with the modem/router itself or connection between my computer and modem/router?
This is very odd!

LOL. Oh I didnt mean I wasn't going to help. Don't know why I said good luck. Just meant nevermind about pinging the modem, since you were right, a pathping would show the same thing.
Which IP? Maybe just post the ping/trace/pathping? Sounds like you have isolated the problem, just need to find the cause now. And can you tell me what pieces of equipment, as in model numbers, and how they are connected?
Also, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to get a moderator involved at this point so they can check the gateway, and make sure its working correctly.

apparently it was the router/modem itself that decided to go crazy. went and bought my own standalone modem and router to replace the one i rent.

Your probably better off in the long run, so good call. I was going to suggest that at the start, since I don't like gateways, but didn't want to sound like a broken record. Glad its working now at least.
