Larger Remote for Minibox

As you are going digital, I picked up a few mini-boxes to install. The problem that I have is an elderly parent living with us that simply CANNOT USE the remote that comes with the minibox. It is too small. The numbers are too small to see. His fingers are not nimble enough to operate that remote. I was looking at how to program a Universal Remote, or if COX offered a larger remote. I just spent 45 mins on the phone w/ COX technical help, and it does NOT appear as if there is a solution. How is an elderly person w/ poor eye sight supposed to use the remote? Why has COX not solved this problem by offering a larger remote?

Are you saying that you have tried to program the URC-8820 to operate the mini-box but were unsuccessful?

If so, have you tried any of the many cheap 2-3 device programmable remotes on the market?

[NO, the remote works just fine. Someone in their 20's - 50's would be just fine here. The problem is the elderly person living with us cannot see the small numbers on the remote and cannot operate buttons that are that small. This is going to be an issue for a lot of elderly people. I am dumb-founded that COX does not have a work around here.

Well, if the buttons on the URC-8820 are still too small, you have no choice but to buy a simple (cheap) programmable remote with larger buttons. The URC-8820 is Cox's "flagship" remote. What was she using for a remote before you got the minibox? Maybe you can convince Cox to let you try something like the M4078, M4094, or RT-U27, RT-SR50,

[Thank you for your response(s) ! The old LARGER remote can turn the TV on/off, and control the volume. but the only to change channels is thru the mini-box. if there is a way to program the LARGE remote to change the channels (off the mini box), COX was unable to share with me how to do it. We tried messing w/ it, but to no avail. I don't believe COX offers remotes anywhere near the size that radio shack offers in their large universal remote. I am in total dis-belief that the COX engineers whiffed on this.

Steve,

Thank you for your inquiry on our forums! At this time we do not have a remote with larger buttons that will work with the mini-box.However, this is something we are looking into enabling in the future.

The Cox Mini box is an Evolution HD-uDTA, that supports the ZigBee RF4CE specification for RF Remotes
http://www.evolutionbb.com/cable/Universal-HD-DTA/subpage495.html

http://www.adamscable.com/pdf/HDuDTA_Manual.pdf

So looking for an RF Remote that has an RF code for Evolution would be a start.  Perhaps call Evolution Digital and ask 800-315-2253

I have found remotes that have an IR code for Evolution, but I do not know if the Cox Mini supports both RF and IR remote commands, I would assume it is capable of both RF and IR.

What is the model number of the old LARGER remote? {I gave you the URL showing the remote images and links to the user manuals.}

Update: Cox to hopefully provide codes for the Mini. and Cox to have a"Big Button" remote that works with the mini in Cox Solution Stores soon.

From a Cox PR person at Corporate

Re: Using a better remote with the Cox Mini Box?

Thanks for bringing this up. I have asked the team to see if they can publish the codes for popular remotes that support the Mini Box to the support side. Don't know what the timing of that would be, but if I get a note back I will pass it on.

Also, I believe we have a new "big button" remote showing up in solution stores beginning this week that will also work with the Mini Box.
