I'm looking for a new TV, one that has Full HD, meaning 1080p resolution. At the Best Buy they asked which TV service I use, and when I told them Cox they said I'd never get to use the Full HD because Cox only provides a 720p service. Is this true and does Cox allow 1080p with an upgraded receiver?

To my knowledge, no broadcaster is casting beyond 1080i. Anything beyond that would be upconversion. Some of the stations are native 720 and some 1080i, and sometimes it depends on the feed. Its ironic Bestbuy would downplay Cox service since in some states they sell Cox service in store.

I think you would want 1080p for anything that's going to serve as your main TV, where I'd assume you might have other boxes like a AppleTV/Roku/Blueray/Playstation/Xbox which all output 1080p, even if live TV does not.

You are going to be watching 720 tv.
The 1080p gets you better viewing when watching DVD's.
