Are you saying the modem actually goes offline when you lose connection? As in you lose the lights on the front? If so, which lights?

Could you explain? You shouldn't need internet for your computer to boot up. Or did you mean "load" the internet?

What is the error you get when signing in? What do you get when you run a XBL test?

The blue lights on the front of my modem go off and the modem continuously searches for a signal.

I do mean it will not load the internet on my computer.

my xbox gives me error code 08 something or other and says retry later

when I test my internet connection on the xbox it says its connected but the speeds do not match up to when I test the internet on my computer.

The next time it happens, can you notice which lights exactly go out and how they come back on?

What is the error exactly? I found mention of error E08, but that's a hard drive error, as seen here. Don't see how that would be related to a internet problem.

So the XBL test passes? What speeds to you get on the Xbox and what do you get on your PC? Also, is the Xbox wired or wireless?

As you suggest I need to pay more attention to the error codes. I will try and get specifics the net time this happens.
