IE Connectivity Issue

When I try to log on to IE, I receive the message below and have done what it shows with no success.Customer Support basically just wants to get me off the phone.  Any suggestions?
The proxy server isn't responding
  • Check your proxy settings. Go to Tools > Internet Options > Connections. If you are on a LAN, click "LAN settings".
  • Make sure your firewall settings aren't blocking your web access.
  • Ask your system administrator for help.

First thing to try is to download a different browser and see if that works. That will rule alot of things out. I suggest Chrome, easy/safe/fast/etc. See if that gets you online, if so have you tried doing what it suggests and checking your LAN settings? If not, then its not a browser issue and will need more info.

Apparently you're using a different browser.  Do you have any options selected under LAN Settings?  Firewall(s) blocking IE?  I don't have the latest version of IE because I use something else, but there use to be a Diagnose Connection Tool with IE.

If another browser is working or other applications such as email or messaging are working, then it's not a connectivity issue, it's a software issue within the computer itself. That would be outside our scope of support, so our ability to troubleshoot is limited.

When you follow those instructions provided by Internet Explorer, what is shown in the LAN Settings window for the proxy server settings? Generally unless you have a specific reason to use a proxy server (some security software configures 'localhost' or '127.0.0.1' as the proxy to pass traffic through itself, or you may be using an anonymizing service) the 'use a proxy server' button should be unchecked.
If you do have a proxy configured there but do not know of filtering software on your computer or any other reason a proxy would be set, some malware can set this. You can unselect the proxy option, but if there is malware present it may be reenabled later.

If clearing the proxy settings doesn't help or if the setting is already set not to use a proxy, then we would recommend resetting Internet Explorer to factory defaults. This Microsoft article explains that process: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737

Beyond that, we may have to refer you to our advanced support partners at Cox Tech Solutions.
