When I sign in to my account to check my email, the little icon for messages has a number in red just above the left corner of the icon. When I click the icon to open, the inbox never matches the number shown. Why. What does that number mean?

The number in red indicates the number of unopened messages you have available. If you were to read a message and then select the option to unread that same message, it still counts as a read message. For example, I have a total of 12 emails in my inbox, 3 in which I've read. The number in red indicates 9. If I were to open one of those 9 emails, then select the option to 'Unread this Email', the number will stay at 8 until I either open a new message or receive new mail. I hope this helps.
