I've been using a cablecard (provided by Cox) for well over a year wIth very few problems. Recently, however, within the past couple months, it appears that COPY_ONCE DRM has been turned on for channels I was previously able to receive with no problems. Now these channels are unviewable. What gives? Were changes made at the first of the year?
How can I go about requesting these channels (which I pay to receive) be set back the way they were?

Copy Once (CCI=0x02) does not prevent you from viewing the channel or recordings, so long as the device and software is CableLabs Certified. It does prevent you from moving the recordings.
Yes, with a PC your only choice is Windows Media Center on Win 7 or Win 8.1 Pro w/ WMC and a certified Media Center extender for secondary displays.
Welcome to the rest of the Cox world where everything but the locals is Copy Once.
Las Vegas used to be mostly Copy Freely, the Cox Vegas market also used to be an independently managed market, but it is now under the same management as the Cox Arizona market, so changes are not unexpected.

I'd like to help. You state the channels are unviewable. Are you getting an error message when you try to tune the channels? If so, what message appears?

What I see on screen is basically a blank grayish colored screen, no sound, and video is basically frozen. I can see that the PVR software is being prevented from filling the buffer used during live viewing. I do not use Windows Media Center as my PVR, but rather use other PVR software. If I try to record one of these channels, I also get a recording of the same gray screen with no audio and frozen video. From the log file of that software, I see the following:
(this was when trying to view channel 1059, which was always good until perhaps around the first of the year)
2016/02/07 12:16:04.031 SetChannel> Channel: 1059 : FRFHD - 7B244F7 = { (1059 : FRFHD - DD80) + [ 1059 : ABCF - 7B23513] }
2016/02/07 12:16:04.038 SetChannel> Tuners available for this channel: 4
2016/02/07 12:16:04.038 SetChannel> Tuner DecoyMethod: OnDemand
2016/02/07 12:16:04.038 SetChannel> ---
2016/02/07 12:16:04.038 SetChannel> Attempt: 0, Tuner: Ceton InfiniTV PCIe (00-80-4f-19) Tuner 4 (00-00-22-00-00-80-4f-19) / 84aa2c9e-41f4-45ac-b93d-d30655ddeb96
2016/02/07 12:16:04.038 SetChannel> > Encrypted: False
2016/02/07 12:16:04.044 SetChannel> > RecorderInfo found: True
2016/02/07 12:16:04.045 SetChannel> > Recorder Content Protection: PROT_COPY_ONCE
As you can see, the software reports the content protection as PROT_COPY_ONCE. I am seeing similar behavior and log entries on several other channels including: 1022, 1025, 1026, 1033, 1094, and 1310.
I believe that copy_once protection causes a problem because my PVR software essentially creates a temporary recording that is used during playback, and I guess this appears as if I'm copying it twice. I'm just guessing here. However, the rest of my HD channels all play fine using this same PVR software.
Hope you can help. Thanks! Kirk

Kirk,
Only Windows Media Center software supports Protected Content, Possibly the HDHomeRun DVR might at some point.
You are fighting a losing battle here and although ColleenD is trying to be helpful, not sure why, she must know the canned response already.
The canned response is going to be something about how this is required due to the content provider contracts and carriage agreements, blah, blah blah, which is total BS, because Comcast, and Verizon FiOS (except for the Fox owned Networks) do not do this and only TWC is as bad as Cox when it comes to Copy Protection.

No copy pasta is allowed on this forum IMO. Either take the time to type it out or don't respond at all.

The copy once flag is tied to specific programming, not to an entire channel, so if the flag were creating the issue you should be seeing some content work and others not. And even then, the flag is specifically for recording, so content should display when using the tuner to view the channel.
Ultimately it may be necessary to have a technician come out, but you'd need to ensure all of your firmware from Ceton is the most current, as well as applying all operating system updates on the PC and your PVR software before we can schedule something.
