DPC 3010 Amber Lights
I recently installed a DPC3010 cable modem. It seems to be functioning with proper speeds, however, when booting, all of the lights (DS, US, ONLINE and LINK) except the power light eventually turn amber. I have searched for information on this subject and haven't found any type of information except that that the lights should be green. The only real operating concern is that it seems to be generating a lot of heat (I dont know if this is a concern or not).
The modem is using frimware version DPC3010-v302r12901-110714a-CHR. Does anyone know if this is a problem or not?

You must not have hit a maintenance window yet, or that firmware would have been replaced. Not strictly because of the date, since basically all versions are safe (091119 and newer), but because the -CHR indicates that it's built for Charter Communications. I honestly don't know if they have any network quirks that Cisco builds workarounds for, but your modem seems to work fine as far as we can see. Levels and ping are good from here.
Since I'm guessing you probably had to get it from someplace like eBay or Amazon, I'd make sure the specs on the power adapter match the specs on the modem. A mismatch there is the only thing I can think of offhand that might cause a heat issue (though we don't see the TX adjustment spikes that could sometimes be caused by bad power either). The 3010 here in the lab is a little warm, but "hot" is probably subjective.
We can update you to the latest firmware if you like. It will just take the modem offline for a few minutes, so let us know if you want to go ahead.

Wow, thanks for the prompt reply! I did purchase the modem from Amazon, they did sell it as new. Yes, I think I would like you to initiate a firmware update. Let me know if you need anything else. Thanks again!

BTW the firmware update fixed the amber light issue.

That's good. I was actually wondering about that myself. There are no public changelogs for modem firmware (we could bug DOCSIS Engineering for them if we really had to, but they say things like "PROPRIETARY AND CONFIDENTIAL" all over them, so we don't usually bother ), so I was curious if it was a bug or a "feature."
Please let us know if you have any other issues!
