DOCSIS 3.0: Went From 8 Download Channels to Only 4

I just noticed this happen to today. I went from having the 8 download channels I've had for a long time to just 4 and the performance has taken a hit. I'm on a Premier plan and instead of 65Mbps I'm just getting around 40Mbps.

So far I've tried both a factory reset through the modem's web page (SB6141) and using the Cox automated service through the phone to reset the modem remotely. Below are the current signal levels.

I'm not sure if the storm that passed this afternoon in Northwest Arkansas had anything to do with this change. Can someone help?

Odd. Your signal levels look great. Can you post the modem logs from around the time of a reboot? Maybe the logs will tell why its not bonding on all 8 channels.

I didn't remember that after doing the factory reset the log would be completely gone. But the only things that stood out before I reset the modem are some errors stating something with DHCP failing, another said something about Synchronizing failed, and another said something about Maintenance attempts failed too many times and rebooted the modem (both errors had today's time stamp). All this in middle of the occasional errors I see about the T3 timeout.

If it helps at all, these are the only log entries I have so far, this after the reset remotely from the Cox automated system (as you can see from the first SNMP entry). The modem has been back online for about 4 hours after the reset and it seems to be steady between 30 and 35 Mbps download ( with aprox 20Mbps upload from Cox's speed test).

Nothing abnormal there. The T3 during a reboot is normal, since the modem can't respond to Cox while it's resetting. May want edit the post to remove your MAC address, just in case. But I don't know what's causing the issue. I kind of feel it might fix itself, if its something going on in the area, but probably don't want to assume that. Anyone else have any ideas?

Darn!! I'm usually more careful about the MAC address and completely forgot to take it out. Thank for the reminder.

If you or anyone knows about anything failing in our area after that storm passed this afternoon, then it might shed some light. I'm not sure what lightning damage symptoms would look in my modem, but I would like to be sure of it before I go buying one.

I'm more hopeful that the issue is external and will be fixed if it's something already known.

In any case, I have to leave but will be checking the forum. Thank you.

I doubt its a hardware issue, at least anything mechanically wrong with the modem. It's more likely since there are no errors in the boot that the channels were purposely shut down for some unknown reason. I would give it overnight, since 2AM is the usual maintenance period where they fix stuff like that. If its still happening after a reboot in the morning, then I think it would be time to either call Cox or reach out to one of the moderators here.

Ok that sounds like a good plan. I'll keep an eye on it tomorrow and reboot it, and will definitely post what happens. Thanks again.

So I rebooted the modem this morning and it was still showing the 4 channels before I left to work. I will check again this afternoon to see the status of it. In any case, has anyone else reported similar issues in my area? I guess the download speed going to half of what it's suppose to be would be an indicator? Thanks.

I saw someone having a issue Alma, AR on a different forum, unless thats also you. Here is a link. And another one, but with less data here.

My guess its something related to the big tornado last week?  But probably good to get a moderator to look at this point. Looks like one posted as I was writing this.  Also, feel free to post on those other threads for trending.

Thank you Health Edge and TiffanyR.

I wasn't aware of that Alma, AR post. Once I remember the login I have for DSL Reports, I might add to the discussion.

I know there's been several weather issues in the last week, but in my case it seems to have started just yesterday. The person on that post seems to have a bit worse of an issue as I do. The difference I see is that he still has the 8 channels but his downloads are a lot worse.

Regardless, I'll be checking the modem again when I get a chance and let you guys know. Thanks.

Ok so now I'm back online and all seems to be working well. All 8 channels are present and the download speeds are back to normal at 62-64 Mbps and 20-22 Mbps upload under the Cox speed test.

From what I can see in the logs, someone has definitely been working with my modem, that or a firmware update has been deployed to all modems of my model. What I see in my first table of logs and the current signal levels follow after. There's a few more logs but seems to be the usual T3 timeout stuff. The new firmware update is SB_KOMODO-1.0.6.14-SCM01-NOSH (compiled Mar 6 2014). Thank you so much guys for your help.

Btw: If I'm posting too much info, please let me know, sometimes I over do it LOL.

Also, the modem has been online for about 4 hours now, and if you don't see all 8 channels on the pasted info below, I guarantee you that it's there.

Woot! I would be curious what the issue was if it needed a firmware update..especially if such a fix could work with others.

From my point of view he was able to fix the issue successfully. Thank you both and Health Edge for helping out. Have a great weekend!!

PS: I'm also curious of what the issue was if you guys find out..

I'm seeing the same issue here in the Fayetteville area as well. 12 year customer and this is the only time I've had issues...

Premiere Tier

Motorola 6141

Only 4 bonded channels

Signal levels are good:

Just not getting full download speeds:

I have a tech scheduled to come out on Sunday, but it DOES look like I'm running SB_KOMODO-1.0.6.12-SCM00-NOSH with a build date of 3/12/13.   Is the updated firmware version that was pushed the version that I should be running, and if so how can I have support push the update?

Hi TiffanyR,

I'm about to start another thread because I think I broke something because I'm back to 4 channels. I'll explain myself.

I just posted the new thread. I did do some changes because of download issues, which makes me think I broke it lol.
