Disconnects?

Good Afternoon Cox,

Is there something wrong with Cox internet now? I have been randomly disconnected multiple times from the internet the following 2 days. It's been disconnects from COX.. My modem's top light goes out for about 1 mins and comes back on. This has only happened frequently over the last 2 days.

Thank you for your help.

Regards.

I am experiencing this frequently as well. Lately it has been 10-15 times a day (no lie). Right now I have been without internet for 4 hours. This is very frustrating and I don't know why I have to deal with this.

Frequent disconnects is probably one of the more frustrating problems to diagnose since there are several points from your computer back to us at Cox where this problem may be originating. The stability of your connection is dependent on the cable modem receiving, and maintaining, a strong signal. Even the most trivial interference may cause you to have significant problems.

You'll first want to start by trying our basic troubleshooting steps outlined here. After you have attempted those steps, try the following:

  • Look for sources of interference from wireless devices. The frequency emitted from some devices is low enough that their signals can cause "bleed over" into copper wiring and interrupt the signal, thus causing disconnects. If your cable modem is near any interfering source, you'll want to isolate the modem by either moving it to another location or turning those devices off.
  • Connect a new coaxial cable to your cable modem from the splitter. Coax cables can develop defects over time and occasionally need to be replaced. On my own cable connection at home I have replaced the coax cable twice over six years. Once due to wear and tear, another time due to damage that was sustained in what forever will be known as the "Shelving Incident" in my house.
  • Remove the coax cable that connects to splitter (if one exists) from the outside and connect it directly to the cable modem. If you maintain a steady signal, then it is possible the splitter will need to be replaced.

If you are still having trouble after trying these steps, the problem most likely will be outside of your control and you will need to contact us for assistance.

Hope this helps!

I've had disconnects for the past month. My "online" light on my surfboard modem would blink for a couple minutes then return back to normal (solid) and I would have internet again. This frustrates me, I called COX and they said that my modem is bad. I am going to buy a new modem and see if this is true.

I'm in San Diego and this has been going on for a week, now.

My LAN is fine. It works without issues.

My internet was fine.

Now, seemingly randomly, my Internet connection drops completely out and then can take up to 15 minutes to reconnect. When it connects it is fine. Signal is good, speed is decent.
Since the signal is good and speed is decent, and I've had this connection for over a year now, logic would dictate that there is something wrong in the system.

Then it just drops out again.

I'm using a Surfboard Docsis 3.0 modem and I'm on a premier (30MB/sec) tier.

This is getting very maddening.  And oh, can you please explain how an electronic cable can "wear out"?

As far as the response to disconnects... Why is it I barely get disconnected for months, then all of a sudden I get disconnected for 1-2 weeks, then it goes away... When I start to get disconnects, I run a spyware scan on all of the computers connected to my router, I unplug the router and modem, reboot computers, I check my router(secured) to see if any outside connections are on it, I check the cable tv to make sure it's working fine, etc. Most of my computers(usually turned off until the weekend) are on a wired connection, I have only 1 on wireless(defintiely not my main computer.)  Fortunately, the frequency of my disconnects seem to have dropped. As for interference/etc, I have no clue what would cause this... I have only changed 2 computers in the last God knows how many years we've had Cox. The computer change happened about 1.5 years ago and the frequent disconnects took place about 2.5-3 weeks ago. Surprisingly I did not get d/c'd last night from 8pm-12am. Unfortunately the d/l speed has dropped by big time. Roughly 1/6th of what it used to be... (On Speedtest.net, I was getting anywhere from 17-20m d/l, now I am down to 3m download  -  at 11:45pm...)
