Data Usage Meter

For the past few days our data usage meter has not read any data whatsoever, except for on the first day of the new billing cycle it read that we used 0.15 GB of data, but nothing since then.  Well I sent an email to Cox, and never received a reply.  So then I called Cox to find out why it isn't reading anything when I've been watching the data meter on a regular basis for the previous billing cycle and it read that we were using data every single day.

The phone calls I placed to Cox were no help at all.  During the first one the representative told me that we just weren't using any data because on their end the meter was showing nothing as well.  So I said fine I'll just watch it and see over the next few days.  Then I decided to call back because I felt like my questions were not answered.  When I called back the second time the representative told me that if we were using our router then no data was being used because supposedly "when you use Wi-Fi data doesn't go through the modem" and therefore doesn't count against your data.  Well I know this is not true because if it were then we would almost never use any data, and the only time I've ever heard this is for a cell phone when you connect your phone to your at home wi-fi or a wi-fi hotspot it uses that instead of your cell phone data.  I explained to the representative that I don't see how that is possible because even if that were true, my husband's computer is connected to the modem and that is what he uses for gaming and he's been gaming the past few days.  The representative then told me she would transfer me to someone who could help me and put me on hold.  Well then she comes back and tells me that she confirmed that we're not using data (I'm not sure who confirmed this for her), and that she can see that we've only used wi-fi the past few days and the previous months she can tell we were using only the modem.  I said that doesn't make any sense, but since I was getting no where I just thank you, and ended the conversation.

I started watching the data meter to begin with because back in April we somehow used a ton of data and went over our data cap, but yet nothing has changed in our household.  We even went through the process of changing our password on our router, and changing the settings on our Netflix account, and whatever else we could think of or that was suggested to us.  Even after all of that we were still reading between 5 GB to 8 GB (some days even more) on a daily basis.  So now that it's reading none I am quite worried where this will lead.  Maybe we're not using much data, but considering our past data usage, it makes me nervous that it's reading absolutely nothing when we've been home the past few days and using the internet (social media, streaming, and gaming) but yet we haven't used any?

I'm hoping someone can explain this to me because I'm pretty sure that the whole "wi-fi doesn't use data" statement is not correct.  And I honestly do not want to end up having a huge spike in data because Cox is having some issue with their data meters and they aren't reading anything.  I know that's what they claimed the problem was previously when customers complained about a spike in data usage.

Is anyone else having this problem with their meter not reading data?

What kind of modem/gateway are you using? I was personally tracking a problem involving a exploit of some equipment which may be increasing bandwidth use.

We use a Motorola Surfboard modem, and a linksys router.

I have been having the same issue...when I contacted Cox they told me that using Google Chrome and not IE was a problem and that I should clear out me cookies cache and update Java.  None of that helped my usage is still sitting at zero.  My usage in June was over the top according to their charts and I don't want to be surprised with usage at the end of my billing cycle.

I tried all of that too before I called, we use Firefox but it didn't change anything.  I even checked it on other computers and in different ways and it still reads just 0.15 for July 17th and nothing after that.

It's it's been a couple of days and the data usage meter is still not reading anything since the 17th.  I know we are using data because we've all been on the internet everyday and my husband games everyday.  I just really don't want to be surprised later on.

Ours hasn't registered any data since July 10th and that was a measly 1 GB which I know is wrong. Nothing since has been logged and I have checked every day. This all happened after they said we went over in June, so there has to be a problem. Cox better not say I went over in July then because there is no way to monitor it. Somebody needs to wake up and fix these issues!

I completely agree.  I should not have to worry about limiting my usage every single day just because I'm afraid that Cox is going to come back and say that we went over.  We have never had this problem before and we have been customers of Cox for 8 years.

Mine is showing zero usage this period, too. I know that's wrong since I've downloaded something like several gigs of podcasts in the last week. Using a hardwired Motorola surfboard DOC3, and this is the only time I've seen this happen since Cox started metering us. Oh, and my usage last period seemed a little off on the high side, too. Since it was nowhere near my limit, I didn't really look into it.

Today it's showing that we used 0.35 yesterday, but nothing else.  Calling hasn't helped because I just get the same answer that we aren't using any data because supposedly wi-fi doesn't use data.  Or that I need to delete my cache and cookies and try IE.  If that were the problem then you wouldn't think it would be showing anything at all.  Posting on here hasn't gotten me any answers (from any Cox representative), other than I'm not the only one experiencing this problem with the data meter.  I can't get the online chat to come up and I never received a response to my email.  So I guess I'm just not going to get any answers or help in this matter.  However, I am keeping thorough records of all of my contact with Cox just in case.
