Data cap recently doubled?

I was pleasantly surprised when I looked at the data usage meter that it now shows my data cap as a premier customer is now 700GB up from 350.

I didn't see any announcements and just wanted to check to make sure it wasn't some sort of bug in the meter app.

So was the data cap recently doubled?

Changes to the data allowances are indeed coming soon for most markets.

So, can I TRUST what the meter says even though I have not heard about an increase and assume it actually IS 700GB?

I don't want to go hog wild and then end up getting a nastygram at the end of the month.

@Rootman

Yes, the meter is showing correct numbers.

Looks like Ultimate is now a 2 TB monthly plan compared to the 400 GB it was prior. Excellent news!

Wow, that's ALMOST fair for the money :)

It might actually make switching up a tier worth it.

Reading the Title and the posts starting this topic on doubling the data caps I must admit I was a wee bit excited. Well, excited may be overstating it, I had been eagerly anticipating the move though, and I thought, "Good for you, Cox." A belated but most welcome gesture.

Then I looked a little further and found that one hand giveth and one hand taketh away.

Ultimate - 500% increase to 2TB.

Premier - 100% increase to 700GB.

Preferred - 40% increase to 350GB.

Now, Preferred is 85% of the price of Premier yet receives but 50% of the speed and 50% of the data. Before this data boost Preferred was 85% of the price, got 50% of the speed and 71% of the data. Looks like the Preferred tier now is receiving even less value for the money as before.

The Preferred name is apt for two reasons. It is far and away the most preferred tier that Cox customers have, and Cox surely prefers it's customers to choose, because they can charge almost as much as the next highest tier while providing only half the level of service.

Or perhaps not.

Doubling the speed of Preferred last year and now raising the data cap by a mere 40% when Cox obviously has the available bandwidth to spare makes no sense in a wired world unless it's purpose is a crass and transparent attempt to incentivize Preferred customers into upgrading to Premier.

Alas, it's probably going to work.

P.S. My excitement has waned considerably.

Not to mention that Ultimate will have another speed increase later this year, my guess is it will be increased to 300 Mbps download.

I can also only assume that these higher data caps will actually be enforced by Cox, whether it be via "overage" charges or service suspension as soon as you go over.

I am a Residential Ultimate client.  I used Cox chat 05/07/15 1014 to verify 400 Gb -> 2,000 Gb cap.  It is true and was advised that if I pass 2,000 Gb I shall be charged.

Since Ultimate is now 2TB/mo and G1GABLAST was only 1TB, what is the new G1GABLAST cap?

Did they advise what the "charge" will be?

Updated Internet Tier Data Cap Increases:

Starter - 300% increase to 150GB

Essential - 250% increase to 250GB

Preferred - 40% increase to 350GB

Premier - 100% to 700GB

Ultimate - 500% to 2TB

Really? Any comment from Cox? Anything?

Premier was previously 300 GBs per month, not 350.

Mine had showed 350, at least for the last year+ I've been a Cox customer.

That's strange, I had Premier for a year prior to upgrading to Ultimate and I specifically remember my cap went from 300 GBs to 400 GBs.

I have to believe Cox must have anticipated some backlash from Preferred subscribers and provided their Customer Service people with a canned answer. Failing that, and being ever helpful, I have listed below some possible Cox responses. Feel free to choose one or more or come up with your own. Audience participation welcome.

"It was a(n) ( ______ ) and will be remedied in due course."

"It was of course intentional and done to "encourage" folks into upgrading to a higher tier."

"Go pound sand."

"We're an unregulated monopoly and can do whatever."

"Be grateful for whatever we do give you."

"Badges? We ain't got no badges! We don't need no badges! I don't have to show you any stinking badges!"
