Cox Mini box remote code for TiVo Series 2

I use a tivo series 2 with lifetime contract as a DVR and it's unable to change the channels through the COX mini box as I don't know the correct 5 digit remote code so that it can mimic the IR remote.

I know there were threads about this with others with this problem, but I wasn't finding anything with a quick search so I Made this post in the hope that someone has posted the remote codes somewhere by now.

Also if there's no solution yet, when is the final date where I'll stop receiving analog signals?  If no solution is available by then are these my options for continuing to get TV through a TiVo DVR?

1) Spend more money each month for a service from COX that doesn't use the Mini-BOX

2) Cancel COX and get my tv signal over the air

3) Invest in a newer TiVo with a cablecard

Any other options I'm missing?

This whole thing has been pretty frustrating and I'm very surprised there's not a solution out there by now.

Hi TiVoUser,

I'm sorry that this has been so frustrating. Currently, there aren't any IR codes that work with the mini box. If you have the mini box made by Evolution, another option that might work is to get a Harmony Universal remote. One of our other customers confirmed that he was able to program a Harmony 650 to work with his Evolution mini box. Harmony now includes the Cox mini box in its remote code database.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but will somehow having a Harmony remote allow my TiVo to control the mini box?

I was the customer who posted the Harmony 650 will control the Evolution minibox.  Yes, it works fine but won't help you, TiVoUser.  You can use a Harmony remote to control both the TiVo and minibox but it's not a solution for the TiVo to control the minibox via an IR blaster.  You will still have to manually change channels using either the Cox remote or a Harmony.  Unless TiVo updates the Series 2 with minibox codes, you are stuck with the options you posted.

That's correct, I have the same problem and need the IR codes for the Minibox. Maybe if all the Tivo users go to Direct TV or other carrier, the codes would come.

This is a complete failure on the part of TiVo. It's not Cox's fault.  We paid for "lifetime" service on our Series 2 machines and they are still chugging along. TiVo should step up or offer a SUBSTANTIAL discount on upgrading.  TiVo has abandoned some of its early adopters, longest standing fans and biggest supporters.  Very poor form.  I can see taking a few months to figure this out but, at this point, the evidence points strongly to TiVo just not caring about standing behind its product or supporting its most loyal customers.

If any Tivo series 2 user can get access to their Tivo's BASH prompt, I could probably provide a script to run at the prompt that will add ir-code support for the Cisco minibox.

How to enable the serial port and the bash shell is left as an exercise to the Tivo owner...

Mark,

I have pretty much all the info that seems pertinent regarding the I/R codes for the Evolution Mini Box, and would really like to see your script so that I could possibly adapt it for us poor Evolution users.  I'm not all that familiar with Linux, but I'm decent at following examples...  ;-)

Ex:

Box Manufacturer: Evolution
Model: DMS2344UHDS

Frequency: 38.5 KHz
Protocol:  NEC1
Device (Decimal): 175.96
Group (Hex): 0xAF60

You're 90% there!!!  You just need to convert the hex code into Tivo TCL commands...  Gary Sargent has a web based converter:

http://www.garysargent.co.uk/tivo/prontoconverter/index.php

After you got the tcl file, you need to run script on your Tivo...  Different Tivo's have different ways of doing this.  Some access it from the serial port.  Others are able to telnet to the Tivo.  It depends on the model.and software version.

BTW, it seems that the evolution and cisco mini-boxes use the same ir codes...

So are people actually getting this to work?  Should I invest in the hardware I need to access the bash prompt?

I would say this is a fairly technical endeavor but very doable.  The hardest part is getting a bash prompt on the tivo.

The IR hex code work is done.  I've had my ReplayTV DVR (Not a Tivo) controlling my Cisco minibox for about a month.  It works great.  I needed to add the IR data for the ReplayTV.

Full disclosure, I don't own or use any TiVo products...

Thanks for the site link!  Unfortunately I must be doing something wrong.  When I enter the codes and click the Generate button, nothing happens.  Does the script usually appear on the same page where you entered the codes?

Hi TivoBabe,

Because there were several issues mentioned in this thread, I'd like clarification. Which question/answer are you referring to?

Hi Becky, I am trying to find the IR codes for the Cox mini box (dta) so that I can enable TIVO to change the mini boxes channels. Is it correct that the Cox dta is a CISCO/Evolution? I need the five-digit numerical code to enable TIVO to select channels when recording or simply to change channels. Right now my family cant see the Christmas specials because the TIVO cant change the channels without the IR code... Please help... Elisabeth
