cant get wifi on my smart phone away from home
Ive had internet service thru cox for a few months now... got it mainly because I am a student and need to access wifi while I am out and about. I have yet to be able to connect my smartphone to any wifi when I'm away from home. It is a huge problem. I have asked representatives at kiosks, called customer service and even asked the installer - customer service said register my cox acct and then there will be an option to register my device (smartphone) but the option has not presented itself. I'm about ready to cancel service and go with a company that answers calls on the weekends ... for starters. Can someone tell me how to access wifi away from home on my smart phone please!?

I think that may be the root of your confusion. Cox service is for your residence. You can hook up a wifi router, or rent a wifi gateway from Cox, but that only gets you Wifi in range of your house. Think of it like a cordless phone but internet. If your "out and about" then your trying to connect to other Wifi networks, not the one you pay Cox for.
With that said, Cox also offers public Wifi. They put little wifi routers (APs) on telephone poles and around town. To use it, you have to be in range of it. See here for a map of Wifi spots.
So which are you trying to do? Connect to your home wifi or public Wifi? What wireless networks can you see around you when you scan?

Outside your home, Cox Preferred and above subscribers can log into CoxWiFi and CableWiFi hotspots at no additional charge. This service is not available for Essentials and Starter customers. You don't have to register your device to use this service. The first time you try to connect to a hotspot, you will be asked to verify your Cox user id and password, that's it. I have used this service in my home town and while traveling up to 1500 miles away.

The distance away from home does not matter. It's the distant away from the AP broadcasting the signal. The hot spots have no technical connection to your home service. We just got the hotspots in RI where I live, but mostly in urban areas. I actually hope they don't become more popular, because they are not "neighbor friendly", with the signal congesting the already congested 2.4Mhz band.
The reason I mention this is because I think OP misunderstood, or was misinformed, that Cox Wifi is some wide expansive network like cellular or mesh. Its not really designed to replace Cox service, only as a bonus if your away and happen to be within range of a AP.
