I currently connect the cable wire directly to my TV and have my TV unscramble the channels (cable box provided is horrible). Now I have the basic cable package and want to upgrade to get channels that include ESPN/Discovery/Disney etc. Will I need a cable box in order to view those channels or will my TV be able to pick them up?

ESPN, Discovery, Disney do not require a box (yet.) Etc. varies by location.

Only true if you are satisfied with the Analog SD 4x3 480i version of the channel.
If you want the HD channel you need an HD Cable box or a Retail CableCARD device

Since the OP was/is a "basic" subscriber and wanted those three channels without using a box, I limited my response to 4x3 SD.
