Arris Motorola TG2472 Modem with wifi and phone (gateway) availability

Looking to upgrade modem. I have Internet Premier (100/10) with phone and TV. I want to upgrade the modem that is included with this bundle (Cisco DPQ3212) to the Arris/Motorola TG2472. The Cox site says this unit is available to rent for $9.99/mo. I went to my local Cox store this morning and they do not have it. I called in to sales and they could not guarantee that's what I'd get (might end up with a Ubee-not what I want). Chatted online with a Cox rep. She directed me to a link that would let me upgrade to a modem with phone and wifi for $6.99/mo, but it is an 802.11n model (probably Ubee). Again, not what I want. How can I get Cox to take my money for this modem that I want?

Unless you are planning to upgrade to Ultimate Internet, why do you want to upgrade the DPQ3212?  8/4 modems, like the one you already have, are approved for up to Premier service.  I don't think you will gain anything if you upgrade to a 24/8 modem and stay on the same plan.  For the $120 you would pay Cox in rental the first year, you could purchase a very good 802.11ac router and own it, not pay the monthly rental.

I see from the other thread you posted in, you are having the IPv6 problem with your Airport router.  Did turning off IPv6 support help out.  I'm in CT also, I haven't seen an announcement by Cox that IPv6 is live here but have noticed it come and go.  Could be they are testing it here.  If you are having other problems with the DPQ3212, please post them here and maybe someone can help you out.  Just my opinion but I wouldn't replace an Airport with a gateway ... maybe an ASUS or Netgear Nighthawk router but not a gateway.

My understanding is that these modem are reserved for customers that subscribe to both Ultimate HSI and our home networking service.  If both of those don't apply the other suggested options would be what is available.  If you're simply wanting to go with an upgraded modem/router solution you could look at some of the retail purchase options available and just use the existing device for phone only.

Thanks for the reply, Allen. The AirPort/IPV6 issue was resolved by switching the setting in the AirPort to "link-local only". The reason for wanting the TG2472 is I am hoping it might resolve the speed issues I am seeing at night. I get 115-130 down during the day. It falls off to as low as 15 at night. I've had two Cox techs out to the house (during the day, of course) and they can't find anything wrong. I am thinking it is neighborhood level congestion. My thought was going from 8 downstream channels to 24 (don't know if my neighborhood supports 24-but maybe 12? or 16?) would improve the situation. One of the Cox techs mentioned having the node for the neighborhood split, but the powers that be said "no". Just looking for solutions to this problem. I suppose I could just buy a 16x4, 24x4 or 32x4 modem, but what if I'm wrong and it does not improve night time speeds? Any thoughts?

Hi, Chris. Thanks for the reply. Basically, I just want to see if a modem with more downstream channels will fix my night time speed issue (see my other reply for more details). This modem has 24x4 instead of 8x4. There does not seem to be anything else for rent that is more than 8x4.

I believe your correct with regards to the rental options.  It may be necessary to consider one of the retail purchase options available if you're looking for something with more channels.

Dumb question: am I correct in thinking that more channels may help in this situation? Also, do you happen to know how many downstream channels are available in CT? Can't seem to get a good answer on that.

More channels might help but only if the problem really is contention related.  I would generally suggest you test during that time without the router to eliminate as many troubleshooting variables as possible first.  Channel count varies by market, you'll currently see between 12 and 24 channels.  We don't keep reference materials on that as how those configurations can frequently change based on service needs.

Okay. Thanks, Chris. You've been very helpful. I did extensive testing on Wednesday connecting directly to the modem and the pattern was the same: 110-130 down during the day, as low as 15 at night. Thanks, again.

If you are a Costco member, they list the Cox approved SB6183 16x4 modem on their website.  With Costco's return policy there is no exposure.  You could try it, if it helps, great, use it for internet & your existing modem for phone only.  If it doesn't help, you can return it.  Same thing with any other supplier with a liberal return policy.

Thanks, Allen. Ordered a Netgear CM600 from Amazon. Will try it out and see where it goes.

Update: received the CM600 and installed (had to call in as it was not listed on the automated self install site). I am now bonded to 24 downstream channels. Night time speeds are now almost always the same as in the day (125 down, 12 up). Occasionally I'll see it as low as 85 or so. But retesting a few minutes later shows full speed again. I am more convinced now than ever that this is a congestion issue at the node level. This has been a frustrating experience. Cox has failed, here, in my opinion. I should be able to get the speeds they advertise without having to take matters into my own hands. I should get advertised speeds with the equipment they are providing. They could have resolved this by upgrading my DPQ3212 to the TG2472. But they didn't want to do that. Also could have been resolved by dealing with the congestion issue. They didn't want to do that, either. Now I've got one more box taking up space on my desk, because I still need the DPQ3212 to keep phone service. In the words of Elaine Bennis: "thanks for mutton"!
