Can I connect a sound bar to my 1980s tv via Cox mini box?

I have a mini box connected to an early 1980s RCA XL 100--I'm using the coaxial cable to connect box to tv.  Can I connect a sound bar through the mini box HDMI port?  If not, how might I be able to connect a sound bar to my very vintage tv?

Hi BB1984, if possible, HDMI is your best bet. The mini box only has coax and HDMI outputs. Your question is a bit outside our normal scope of support, so I'm hoping some of our Forums superstars will have ideas and suggestions for you. 🙂 -Becky, Cox Support Forums Moderator

"Home Theater" setups in the 80's were purely analog, and the VCR was the hub.  You connected your coaxial to a VCR...connected analog cables from the VCR to the TV...analog cables from the VCR to a stereo receiver....receiver to speakers...and listened to 2-channel stereo from bigger speakers.  The only thing digital was the CD player but it converted its audio to analog before outputting to the receiver.  You're trying to put a digital device in an analog setup.  It'll only work if something has an analog-to-digital convertor.

Ok, I get it--what an education I'm getting!  i do have an old DVD/VCR that, until recently, was working--but a power surge ruined it last year.  However, I also have and use a 90s receiver--I have it hooked up to a turntable and CD player (plus a Bluetooth adapter).  So, what if I try this:

Run a coax cable out of the mini box into a splitter--then send one coax to the TV, and send the other to my receiver.  I would need a coax-to-RCA cable, right?  And then play the TV through my stereo speakers...?

Btw, my mini box audio "settings" only mention volume control--nothing else...

Why are you doing this?  How much is a TV nowadays?

We have a nice tv setup in another room--this is a vintage tv we want to use for fun...

I can certainly understand the attraction to vintage...so keep the audio vintage and fun as well.  If it worked with the DVD/VCR combo with digital out, buy another on eBay.
