is it better to buy just a router or a modem/router combo

I have ordered cox internet and phone bundle (100 Mbps), and elected to buy my own equipment. I was told cox will send a modem for the phone, with Ethernet port for internet. that means I would have to get router for Wi-Fi, I was thinking maybe buying a high end modem/router with at least 16/4 channels would give me better internet speed. Am I wasting my money going this route?

The modem for the phone is a separate piece.  You'll still need a modem/router for the Internet.

I recommend a combo for the sake of cables & cluttter.

we have had a netgeR combo I purchased at a cox store ( so they have to stand by it) for less than what it would cost to purchase individually at Best Buy.

They keep warning me that that's " my problem," but that's only because it's over 3 years old.

It's NOT my problem. There are soooo many problems.

I always recommend a separate internet modem and a WiFi router. That eliminates a single point of failure with a combination unit.

Thank you guys for the quick answers. I know if I got just a router, then I would have to connect it to their provided modem via Ethernet port. what about if I purchased the modem/router combo, does it have to be connected to their modem also, or I can connect it to another coaxial outlet in the house?

boqal57,

If you are interested in purchasing a modem/router combo, you can use that as a stand alone device for your internet service. At this point, the modem/router would need to be connected to another outlet in your home.
