Wireless continues to drop

I am continuing to have my wireless connection drop. When I restart the router it reconnects. I have a Trendnet N600 router and Motorola Surfboard SB6141 modem, all new devices.  I had Cox techs come out about 5-6 months ago several times but they were not able to pinpoint the issue. It got to the point that I was just willing to deal with it since the visits produced nothing and took up a lot of time. I'm now at the point where I trying to readdress but don't want to go through the same thing so thought I'd start here.

I contend that I never had a problem until I upgraded to Cox Contour for my TV.  They have said it's just a coincidence, but I know the Contour sends signals back and wonder if this may have something to do with it. I even returned the router and bought a new one (same one - N600) but still have the same issues.  I could go several days and be fine, other days it could drop a few times a day. There are times where it seems to drop at the same time each day for a period of time. One tech I got on the phone said they did catch higher packet loss and this could drop the signal from the modem to the router. Onsite techs seemed to disagree. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Is it just wireless connections that drop?  Can wired connections access the net when the wireless can not?  Do the wireless clients completely disconnect  or are they connected but can't get through the router to the net?  If you are actually dropping wifi connections, I would look at the router and the environment.  Interference, such as neighbor's networks, cordless phones, etc can play havoc with wifi connections.  If your router is a dual band unit does it happen on the 5GHz band too?

Hello EMN,

Please bypass the router and plug a device directly up to the modem. Let us know if you continue to have drops with that configuration.

Thanks,

Thanks for the prompt replies - I will try to bypass the router and let you know.  I have also connected to the 5ghz band to see if it stays connected (also have another device still connected to 2.4).

So my wireless connection dropped again at the same time it has over the last week or so (as mentioned for a few weeks at a time it will drop at the same time, then move to a different time and drop at that same time for a few weeks). I was on the 5ghz band and it still dropped, so it doesn't seem to matter if I'm on the 2.4 or 5. I have a desktop that is hardwired to the router (not the modem) and it was connected before I restarted the router again, so it appears it is just the wireless signal that gets dropped and not necessarily the connection to the router. I think the odd thing is the whole timing issue and it happening at the same time for days at a time. Thanks again for any feedback.

EMN,

I would recommend changing the channel on the router to see if that would help with the disconnects.  Also, if the router is not in a central location in the home you may want to move it.  If that's not an option, a signal extender may be a good idea as well.

First I would check the logs and statistics of the router. Found this emulator here. If you need help getting to that screen let me know. In the logs, look for what happened around the time of the drop. The router may not show it though. At the same time, check the wireless stats and see if your getting packet loss.

Last, check out inSSIDer 3 which is free here. Look for any overlapping channels, and then try to change your wireless channels to those least congested.
