Why do you have to have a 5Gb Network Card to reach 100mbs in the Premier with Powerboost Package
I have been having a problem with my download speeds since October when they changed the package speeds. In August I was seeing 30-40 when the package was up to 50mbs. Now I am seeing 2-20mbs on average and have had numerous techs come out the past couple of months. I have had 50-90mbs on my wireless devices so I was confused to why I am not getting those speeds hard wired to the modem or router. Finally the Tech today said it was because when they upgraded the package to 100mbs they made it where you have to have a 5Gb networking card in order to receive those speeds. Why do you have to have that speed on the card when a 1Gb card can support it? Why did cox not tell people about the problem and continue to let me keep paying the higher amount when clearly it was a known problem according to the tech? I am totally confused and feel like it has taken way to long to figure it out. Not to mention the fact that I still have the technology to at least support the speeds rom before and am only getting 2-20mbs now. Plus it doesn't say in the package details that you are required to have a 5Gb network card to receive the faster speeds. Another reason I have the Premier package is because of the data cap being 300Gb before they flag your account and slow your speeds on the old data cap. My husband and I do a lot of gaming and streaming. We generally use 200Gb+ between updates on games, downloadable content, Netflix, Vudu etc. Plus we always have LAN parties over the summer. One month we went over because a lot of our online games needed to be updated and that took a lot of the data. Has any one else been facing this issue? I want this problem fixed but feel like I am getting screwed when the Tech tells me it is our equipment and can't do anything about it.

I think you heard incorrectly, or the tech used the wrong phrase.
What you need is a 5Ghz wireless network card, not a 5Gb card. The reason is that the older 2.4Gz cards that used 802.11 b only goes to 11Mb and g only goes to 54Mb, the newer 5Gz and 802.11 N and a-c can support higher speeds up to and above higher than 54Gb.
So if you want higher than 54Mb you will have to use a wifi adapter that is 5Ghz along with a wireless AP / router that supports the higher standards.

All I know is that every computer I have has a 1GB NIC and I commonly get way over 100MB download speeds with my premier Cox connection. AFAIK there is no such thing as a 5GB NIC, the next jump after 1GB is 10GB. So something is wrong with the information.

i agree with you Rootman. The standards are 100BaseT, 1000BaseT and 10GBaseT. Something doesn't sound right, sounds like a misunderstanding. I can even get 90+Mbps on a 100M connection. Nothing any higher than 1G should be needed on any Cox plan short of Gigablast.

If you are using a Docsis 3.0, and you are wired into the modem that would give you the best speeds possible because it is a direct connection. Are you connected to wireless router or direct to the modem? Have you reset your equipment recently?
