Suspicious phone call from someone claiming to be from cox

I don't think it was Cox.  Cox would offer to transfer your services when you called to discontinue.  I would suspect a business you gave your number to while preparing to move, such as a moving company, realtor or maybe your sleazy apartment manager.

Scammers know it can be profitable to "help" people during hectic or emotional times, such as moving, financial problems, deaths.  Someone who got your info while preparing to move probably sold it to a third party for an opportunity to scam you.

To help others, I’d post their contact info here and file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.  It won’t launch an investigation but at least you’ll warn others.

I would say Bruce is correct. However, there is some other, even if unlikely, possibilities.

1. Did someone else in your household tell Cox? Maybe they weren't a authorized user so the Cox person called you back?

2. Did you tell any company you were moving? Like the provider in the area you are moving to? For instance, if you were moving from a Cox area to Comcast and called Comcast to port your number, that port request would have been sent to Cox, alerting them of your move. They may have been calling to see what you wanted to do with your other services.

3. Who did the guy say he was? Did he say he was Cox? You don't have to post the info here, I just mean in general.
