I've recently moved and moved my Cox Internet Preferred with me. After the move I only get download speeds of 9.5Mbps. I've talked to multiple people in tech support and get the same advice every time. "Restart your router, delete cookies, and go away." Of course this never worked and I couldn't get any actual advice. So I decided to get a tech support person to come to my home and look for a problem. After the visit I was told that the coaxial cable in my apartment complex couldn't handle any higher internet speeds. If this is really the case then I suppose I need to downgrade my internet but I wanted to make sure this was the only problem. I'm running a Motorola SURFboard 6580 which is a modem/wireless router. I've read other people having issues with this item, mostly in updating the firmware (which your internet provide has to do for you.) Could this be part of my problem with the slow internet, or is it really just the coaxial cable?

I'm having similar problems and it's been going on for months and getting worse. At first I thought it was my modem and bought a new one, but that hasn't helped. Then I remembered when a technician had come out a little over a year ago to help me with internet and t.v. problems after a bad storm, that he had told me that my lines were old and that was a big part of the problem. He ended up installing an amplifier, for my one t.v. and told me that because of the terrible signal I wouldn't be able to have another t.v. in the house. Since then I've had a lot of problems, and feel like I even have to have a signal reboot done every couple of months so I can watch t.v. My internet modem needs to be restarted several times a day so I can get anything done. I want to have new lines put in to my house, but I'm afraid I would be charged for it, and frankly I don't have the money. I haven't bothered to have another tech come out, because if it is the lines like he says, then what help will it be?

" the coaxial cable in my apartment complex couldn't handle any higher internet speeds"
What kind of coaxial cable is it? Also, do you know what your gateway's signal levels are? To learn how, see this support article.
