Speed performance seems to be limited, despite service upgrade.

I'm in the same position as the others who have said they are experiencing slow internet speeds.

COX replaced my modem with a Netgear N450 a few months ago. Then, I upgraded service this month.

But, my account says I am using a DN3002P.

Specs: Premier Service using Windows 7 and the aforementioned modem.

Can someone please sneak a peek at my account and push that speed button? Or is it wave the magic wand? Whatever it takes to fulfill my need for cyber speed! :)

Thanks!!

What speed are you getting? Wired vs Wireless? The amount can tell something about the cause.  For instance, if you cap at exactly 32Mb then it might be a service code you didn't get on the account with the service upgrade.

Same here. I've been on Preferred Internet for years and I'm only getting 25-30Mbps download speeds. I also upgraded my modem several months ago to the NetGear N450 CG3000Dv2 (offered by Cox), though my account also shows the DN3002P, whatever that is. I'm on Windows 8.1 Pro x64 with a wired connection from my PC to the Cox modem/router. I'd also appreciate someone checking my account's speed and making some magic happen, so that I get what I'm paying for. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply!

Yes. It's at 32 and change, never above. Hard wired, Ethernet cable to the pc.

So, getting the service code ... call COX customer service and wait in the queue?

I'm a little, well, puzzled at this. I've seen many posts from folks in a similar dilemma, with the same 'cap'.  If, in fact, it is the result of missing this code; how can they over look this essential component so often? This isn't meant to be condescending, but, isn't it precisely their job to make certain whatever bits have to be in place, are actually verified to be there? You know, a check list. Make sure all the boxes are ticked off when someone signs up, or upgrades service. Even at the 'Preferred' level I never got to 50 mbps on the speed test.

Anyway, thank you so much for the heads up. Glad there are people like you out there to help us sort this stuff through!

This started a couple years ago when Cox started offering speeds that were higher then what a DOCSIS 2.0 modem can do. DOCSIS 3.0 modems break up the connections to channels, like lanes on a highway. I think the concern was if people upgraded to the faster speed with the DOCSIS 2.0 modem they would over saturate the one lane the modem connected to. The problem is now the norm are for people to have DOCSIS 3.0 modems. You can't even buy DOCSIS 2.0 modems in the store. So the same system which was set up to try to fix a problem is not doing nothing but causing headaches. But like all big business, once a change is put in place, its hard to remove. What they should do IMO is just swap the requirement for the code. Have DOCSIS 2.0 modems require a special code to work so it effects the least amount of people. But what do I know..just a customer.

As for why they don't catch it, I think thats more about another change that happened recently to Cox's call centers. They fired/relocated a couple thousand people around the country. So now alot of the Tier 1 support have less then a few months experience. They haven't learned to think outside the box yet.

@ChrisL Can you check my account too and make the appropriate adjustment? I also posted above about my slow speeds, though I have the Preferred Package. Thank you.

Thanks for the reply, Chris!

I just tested it. Here's what I got:

So, I take it the enchanted wand thingy didn't work?

How about, I dunno ... some Magic dust? Like in the Cheech and Chong "Santa Claus and His Old Lady" skit;

"Yeah, magic dust, y'know. He used ta give a little bit to da reindeer, a little bit to Santa Claus, a little bit more for Santa Claus, a little bit more...

"And this would get the reindeer off, man?"

"Aw, got 'em off?  Man Are you kidding?  It got 'em all the way around the world!" Hehe.

I really appreciate you taking the time to look into this for me, Chris.

Got any more tricks up your sleeve you can use to remedy this?

It feels like I'm goin' nowhere stuck in first gear, and all the while me motor, she's just a screamin'!

I'll keep a watch on this post for your reply.

@ChrisL Thank you very much Chris. I just tested my speed on various services and I'm clocking a consistent 50+Mbps. Question: I also received an email from Cox regarding this as an upgrade, though it isn't. And my online Cox billing shows a $15.12 charge/credit. Just to verify with you, Cox isn't going to charge me for this, correct? Have a great weekend.

I checked again and the update to the modem appears to have worked as far as I can tell.  Did you try that test with a wireless-G device by chance?  That's about the maximum speed you'll get if that's the case.
