I am being bombarded with emails from all over the world saying i have won this or have inherited this and i just need to contact them. How do I stop these?

Are they coming from the same email address? If so, block that email address. How you do that depends on how you check your email. Do you use webmail on cox.net? Or do you use a program like Outlook?
In general, everyone gets spam. There is no easy answer. Spam filters can help. Making your own filters can help. But you also need to be careful who you give your email out to. I specifically create email addresses that I only use for stuff I know will cause spam. That's actually one of the main purposes for my cox.net email addresses.
