Slow upload speeds :/

I'm back ... again.

Going to just cut to the chase here and start blithering on about speed tests, because what does it matter, I'm just some number in the system generating money for the company itself and I'm probably just an annoying customer at this point.

So anyway, download seems fine, can't say I'm having issues with it ... it's at least acceptable.  But upload is pretty poor and I certainly don't trust the tests here on the Cox site itself because it will show my upload being relatively slow and then as soon as the test finishes, it's as if it's designed to magically display my advertised rates when realistically the performance I'm experiencing on this end is anything but - and I am sure of this, because I see it in gaming, broadcasting and speedtests, consistently.  The truly odd thing is that sometimes it's perfectly fine, and sometimes it's atrocious like it is now.  Is Cox having some kind of technical issue?  Does the weather being even slightly cold or simply moist just wreck my connection?  What is going on?  :/

http://testmy.net/db/lWRJaNeA

I'm not even pushing 5 Mbps out of my advertised 10 ... this is becoming extremely frustrating for me.  I cannot broadcast with these rates / unstable upload speeds.  Furthermore, I do not feel like I am getting what I'm paying for with this connection.  I am especially frustrated because I bought a new modem and router to suit the new tier of connection which was painful enough on my budget as it is  and I'm still met with a frustrating as heck inability to broadcast with even a 2 Mbps out of my should-be total of 10 Mbps.

Not only do I drop a ton of frames and end up with disgusting VoD's that are full of choppy / time warped segments, but I disconnect from broadcasting sometimes as well.  It's consistent enough that I'm pretty sure  there is some kind of problem, and I don't know what the heck it is.  But I am starting to wonder if anything but the planets themselves aligning is required for the connection to actually work as intended.

Note:  I am wired into the router on my PC with which I use to broadcast.  I do not care for wireless anything on my PC, period.  Yes the router is Wireless (which I only use when I'm watching say Netflix in the other room.  Also, even with literally nothing else but myself using the connection, I am getting these speeds / results)  The router and modem are brand new, I've done a lot of testing with both and with just the modem.  I am pretty sure it is not hardware related.  I've looked into my resource monitor, everything checks out to be normal, nothing out of the ordinary when idle.

Sorry for what this thread initially was.  I'd really appreciate some insight as to what's causing my upload speeds to be so consistently low.  This is all really important to me because of something I'm attempting to become a part of which pretty much revolves entirely around broadcasting ... and if I can't provide a consistent broadcast, no one (including myself) wants to be a part of it.

Hello Jesiah,

I can certainly understand your frustration with slow speeds and we want to help. What times during the day/night that this happens? Also, what is the make/model of the router you are using?

Hi Allan, thank you for your reply.

It is not 24/7 that these issues happen, I should've clarified in my previous context, but there is some kind of definite consistency in these issues.  I usually try to broadcast between 3:00 PM central and 12:00 AM central, not that entire span of time mind you, just that's when I usually have a chance to do so is in between those time frames, save for weekends when I can actually do so earlier on in the day, so I can't give much other information than my general broadcasting times.  Sometimes it's fine ... sometimes it's just ... far from it.

The last time this occurred was the night I posted this thread, which was Thursday I believe.  My connection was struggling pretty much since I had tried to use it for broadcasting at about (CST) 7:30 PM Thursday, and it persisted in such a way all the way until about 10:00 AM Friday which is when it then cleared up and now things seem okay, for the time being, I'm pretty sure with how this has been persisting though, it's going to happen again at some point.

The weather in my area was fine during that time period then as well.  I even checked weather radar to see if any other areas near me were being hit by storms, it was all pretty clear from what I gathered.  My download seemed fine, I have no complaints with getting 90 Mbps out of 100, that's plenty of speed.  The upload seems to struggle with consistency like even having say 80% of the advertised speed which would honestly be fine at that ... but unfortunately it sometimes struggles to even do 2 Mbps while my download seems fine and I don't know why.

Also to answer your question, my router is a Linksys AC1600 / EA6400.  It should be plenty of power for this connection, especially when only my PC is running on it and everything else is off.  Also for additional information I have the guest network turned off, I am only utilizing the 2.4 GHZ Wireless with the 5.0 GHZ portion turned off.  And finally, my network is set to not broadcast SSID as well as encrypted with a password.  The firmware is also up to date on it.

Hope that helps.

Hi TiffanyR,

Things have been fine for the past few days, but tonight my upload started crawling / struggling again.  I went back below 2.5 Mbps and it remained like that for about 15-30 minutes, maybe longer as I wasn't paying enough attention to the time, and then at about 1:35 AM went up to about 4-5 Mbps.

I cycled power once w/ router still connected, upload then went down to 3.5 Mbps at about 1:40 AM.  So then I cycled again and now I have bypassed the router, similar results, so it is not my router.

Here is proof / results with router bypassed:  http://testmy.net/db/v9iApIy (At 1:45 AM roughly)

That's with the router bypassed.  Same thing different day, pretty much.  I don't know what causes this to happen.  It just happens sometimes and it is seemingly random, and when it does, my performance really suffers online.  I notice some pretty bad lag spikes in online gaming, I cannot broadcast without dropping frames (or even disconnecting) and it's really frustrating.

I also checked weather maps as well, everything in my state / area is clear.  It's chilly outside but not windy or rainy.  I don't know what else information to provide other than this.  I did one final test at 1:55 AM, here is the result, still with router bypassed.  http://testmy.net/db/wojLCWE As you can see, the consistency in speed is lacking and is definitely struggling.

I hope all of this helps.

Thanks for your time, again.

TiffanyR,

When you say please bypass any splitters ... I'm not sure if that's within my jurisdiction.

I say this because I only have one coaxial cable in the house and it runs straight from the cable outside of the house to my modem inside and I use no additional splitters or anything whatsoever.  It's just a straight line to the modem, which is then of course wired into my router, so on and so forth.  I have made sure that everything is tight and secure on my end (several times actually, long prior to this posting) and I can verify that all's good on this end as far as that's concerned.

So if there's any splitters that might need bypassing, it likely would be where the technicians installed the line itself, I'm assuming?  I ran another test, still struggling with my upload speeds.  Perhaps the installation itself is actually a bit faulty and I do require some technicians to come out and look at the part of the installation itself that is not within my jurisdiction.

Thanks again for the reply and your time.  I'm happy that you finally caught that I'm experiencing packet loss for some reason or another and hopefully it can be fixed with a simple visit to the installation.  I'm still weary of that concept though because I really don't want to be charged if supposedly "nothing is wrong" (when obviously there is) ... my budget is already hurting from the recent purchases / tier upgrade.  I'd like to stay at this tier, it's great when it's running fine ... just, really frustrating when it isn't.

Anyway, thanks again.

Edit:  Also I checked my wires for bends / frays.  There are no frayed wires, all of the ethernet cables I'm using are actually new.  Nothing out of the ordinary.  I checked them all.  I mean if need be, I could probably try some other ethernet cables too, just to be sure.

I still seem to be struggling again at this time...  The connection was good for a short while, but now it's back down to struggling, again.  Averaging about 5 Mbps upload, with it spiking between 3 and 6.  I can't broadcast with these rates and that's very disappointing to me because there's an event going on today in a game I play that I wanted to broadcast and be a part of during broadcast that I cannot due to struggling connection.

I am actually a bit saddened by this.  :l

Hi Jesiah, there was maintenance being done in your area yesterday. Please restart modem/router/computer, wait two minutes between each device before restarting the next. After all the equipment is finished restarting, please re-run  a speed test and let us know if the upload speeds improved.

Hi MichaelJ,

I followed your instructions.  Thankfully I had done some speedtests prior to following your instructions which was down to 3 Mbps upload rates and peaking at about 5 Mbps.  After the reset I haven't seen it dip below 5 Mbps as of yet and occasionally shows 6-8 though mostly it's around 5, but I've only been running tests for a short while now.  I'm not sure if the reboot changed anything in the modem or not but at least it looks like it's fairing a little better now.

May I ask what kind of maintenance was done in my area?  I'll keep testing as time goes on and report back with my results should any crawling reoccur.  Thanks for your time.

Excellent, thank you.

I might start doing that just for the sake of asking around.  I saw unfortunate results during a speedtest, though.  So I can't really say whether or not anything is fixed for me.  Maybe it's something in this area, as pertaining to the fact maintenance was being done?  That's why I was asking what was done in this area, but if you can't disclose that information here I can understand.

Part of wondering that is whether it was my city, state, or actually near my living area.  But I imagine it was state / city.  So anyway, I saw 3.5 Mbps last night - http://testmy.net/db/lUtiSsWj

But I also ran a test today at about 10:00 AM and got 12.5 Mbps http://testmy.net/db/cdH4CB29

So it's too early for me to be able to say whether or not it's fixed.  I'd love it if it stayed like this all the time, haha.  T_T  I'll check around with Cox on Facebook and Twitter.  Thanks for all your time and replies.  And I'm sorry if I'm becoming a nuisance with this.

Hey MichaelJ,

I'm thinking I really might need a technician to come check the installation outside of my home.  This has gone on consistently / long enough (since installation, basically, which is a few months now) and I've gone through many steps to resolve the issue on this end to no avail ... I'm still getting results such as:

http://testmy.net/db/JkxK7l1

Out of advertised 10 Mbps upload rate.  So yeah ... I think perhaps it's time to have them come check the installation itself.  I know this problem is not on my end.  I've seen my speeds push their advertised rates, but most of the time they do not, and it's been verified that I have packet loss, which could be from the installation having an issue itself.

I'm really really hoping this is the case because I would really love to see the connection go to full advertised speeds, otherwise ... blargh, it's really frustrating!  :/

Thanks your for your replies and information, too.  Much appreciated.  Have a nice day.
