Repeatable modem reset

Hi all,

This problem has been going on almost since I switched to COX back in April but after a call to support it seemed to died down (not completely gone after the call, just much better) but is now back in a big way (for the last month or so).

I am using the rented DOCSIS 3.0 modem from COX and every time I stream video online I crash. Can take anywhere from 15 seconds to 2 minutes but it will kill the modem and force a reboot. This is on both wireless and wired, across multiple devices and is 100% repeatable. I can surf fine, but I will have issues with bigger downloads (various online games so it's using P2P and direct download) but I can game fine for the most part.

The one time I called we tried to see if I was stuck in a firmware upgrade cycle (still on 1.0 from 2012 so I doubted it at the time) and verified with tech that was not the issue. I was supposed to call back once it happened again, and upon doing so got a different technician who said they would send someone to the apartment the next day or two (I forgot how long but any longer than a day was my choosing) for a replacement modem. Later that day we saw a COX truck with a bucket in our area and then the problem got drastically better for a while.

Anyway, any help or advice would be appreciated since there is no logs on the modem itself.

P2P is one possibility I think warrants further investigation.  I've seen P2P protocols for example that'll open too many connections which will saturate a router to the point that it crashes.  I'd try disabling P2P or limiting the number of connections used to see if that makes a difference.

ChrisL-

Thanks for your response. 98% of the time there is no P2P going on. I get what you are saying about max connections can cause the crash but there I have found now way on the COX rental DOCSIS to throttle max connects.

That said, watching a video online shouldn't dump the modem every single time no matter what since its UDP and is connectionless protocol.

Just really frustrated since the way uptime is monitored is an hourly (or is it bi-hourly) heartbeat and so without logs its impossible to prove the amount of times I get these resets without having a tech on the phone.

When you can consistently reproduce the problem such as you are that definitely points to something internal as being the cause.  The gateway itself has very basic features.  Connection limit enforcement would be something that would have to be done on the client side.  It is possible there is simply a problem with the gateway itself.  You could try factory resetting it to see if that helps any.
