Remote control not operating properly

My Cox remote control is not allowing me to change channels, access the menu or select options. The only function that works is the volume and mute buttons. I cannot change channels by using the up-down arrow buttons or entering the numbers at the bottom of the device. Why is this suddenly happening and how can I fix it?
