Ransomware

Anybody know how to remove ransomware? The Cox Security Suite did not prevent it from installing on the desktop and has now encrypted all files, photos, etc. Looks like it's call the Tor Project, wants me follow a link to a website and pay a ransom in Bitcoins, also wants to install a browser, neither of which I have done. I have run all kinds of virus scans and security scans, but none have been successful at detecting it or removing it. Any help would be appreciated.
