Problems with POP email account using Outlook?

Has anyone else had this problem? Anyone know anything about what Cox is doing about it? I so don't want to call tech support again. It is incredibly aggravating all around, and they know it.

I've been unable to use my POP account on Outlook 2013 for more than a day now. The "tier 2" tech support said yesterday that they had been working on a problem between MS Outlook POP and Cox servers since the previous evening (July 1). I've had periodic problems with my POP account and Cox off and on for a couple of years.

I am not going to give up using a POP account, and I prefer the Outlook interface. I don't see the point in paying for a service that isn't working and doesn't suit my needs.

Anyone?

Hello kashka,

What issues are you currently experiencing with your email? Are you getting any error messages?

My Outlook program times out waiting for the POP server. I spoke with a Tier 2 (?) technician the other day, and they said they are having a problem between MS Outlook and your POP server, and were working to resolve it. No other email programs are affected. We made sure my settings were correct - it is not that. It has been two full days. I was wondering if anyone else here was reporting the problem, or if anyone knew what was happening. I must be the only one. I've had this problem off and on for a few years, it usually only lasts a few hours. Increasing the time on my software's polling the server doesn't help (so don't suggest it). And though the IMAP setting works, for the way I want to handle my email, it is really inconvenient. I have to go in and physically delete emails from your server. If I am not able to use my cox email the way that is most convenient for me, I need to decide what to do.

I'm also using Outlook, my primary account setup being POP email. Just checked my earliest saved message (locally) and it is from December 2006 so I have been doing this a LONG TIME.

Over the past two to three weeks I have been receiving emails in large batches that have been "held" somewhere for many hours, usually getting dumped into my account at 4-5:00am (I'm in Phoenix). This morning I have received emails that have SENT date stamps from JULY 3rd. Today is JULY 7th.

I'm a Microsoft MCSE in desktop OSs since 1993 (yes, Windows 3.0), Server OSs since 1998 (Windows NT 3.51), Cisco CNE since 1999 (OS6), and various other desktop, server, and networking credentials for a 35 year career. The last thing I want to hear someone tell me is "have you checked your password?"

WHAT SEEMS TO BE THE ISSUE WITH EMAIL?

Oh dear, that's terrible! My main problem cleared up for me after I rebooted again. I suspect that Cox had cleared the problem, but I needed to clear something out with a reboot. Still, every time after I restart my email program, I have to type in my password in a window that pops up after the first polling. There's always the old "IBM drop" solution. Remember that one?

Yes, this is a server problem. I have been making it a practice of logging on to webmail and checking my mailbox every night before I go to bed. No unread messages. In the morning I launch Outlook and have a half-dozen or more "new" messages that were actually sent throughout the previous day or in this morning's case several days.

I checked and did find problems with two of your email accounts and made some changes on our end.  If you're still seeing these symptoms however I'd suggest trying to disable any anti-virus/spam you may have installed and see if there is improvement.

ChrisL:

I spent several hours clearing out my main mailbox yesterday, I was a 39%, that should not matter but it'll make it easier to migrate my mailbox to a different server if this is a load balancing issue.

This is a server issue, my A/V would have no impact. If I log onto webmail and take a screenshot at midnight and take one again at 7:00am, there are clearly emails that should have arrived to my inbox several to many hours before midnight that do not "arrive" until the wee early hours of the morning.

I'll monitor and report back, but I had multiple emails from several sources come in out of order and with timestamps many hours off from when they were sent.

Actually I had already moved the impacted accounts prior to my initial reply to you.  If you're still having issues we'll need to investigate possible PC issues further.  Are you getting any kind of error codes at all?

@sumac

That error message normally occurs when there is an interruption of the connection to the server usually caused by anti-virus software.  I'd suggest trying to disable any anti-virus email scanning you may have setup and see if the problem persists.  You could also try sending your email via webmail and seeing if it goes out that way.

ChrisL,

Thanks for replying. I am going to investigate this with the vendor where the emails are coming from. I had several that arrived early this morning that had date stamps of July 6 and 7.

It is definitely not at my PC because if I log into webmail I can see the same time/date stamps of when the messages were sent and when they hit my inbox.

I'll report back.

Thank you!

By chance are all the emails you're seeing this happen to coming from a particular sender?

ChrisL, yes, see my previous post.

I'm investigating emal headers. I'll post back when I know more.

Thank you!
