Upon turning on browser ( Safari with Mac) received an official looking message that speed insufficient, and click OK to download update. I did not comply and checked for updates in normal fashion to find there were no updates needed. Suspect this is another new wrinkle to a scam and could be very dangerous to have clicked on that "OK". Just wanted to pass this on - check your normal method of updating before falling for these things! Others seen this?

Could you give a screenshot or a link? What is your homepage that is starting with Safari?

reply to "Kudos" - sorry, do not have a link and did not save a screenshot of this, but it did not look like normal alert to update software. My home page is the Cox home page, and that is where this appeared.

You can call me "Kudos" if you want to. And I think you mean this?

This is Pedal20 - just want to add to my warning about scam on Cox Page telling you that your " speed needs optimizing" and to click on OK. I find that this seem to occur now only when signing into Web Mail. Cox has confirmed that it is indeed a scam attempt. Now , I note that clicking on the "X" to close it sends you to another screen to say OK again, and the only way you can close this( at least on my Mac in Safari) is to "force quit". As you all likely know, you should never update anything except in the prescribed manner for updating. Cox has been aware of this for several days now, and hope they can find a fix soon, as I can't believe this has not already tricked a bunch of folks!
