Like so many I have had nothing but headaches with Cox Digital Phone service and it has only been four days since the install. The usual things that everyone else has reported, In this case I am using the Cisco box. Tech is coming out tomorrow and I will show him what I discovered. After reading the posts on these forums regarding low signal drops. I disconnected the splitter combining my TV and internet/phone service (goodbye TV, at least for 24 hrs). After connecting the master coax coming from the wall directly to the Cisco box, I have had steady phone and internet service for the last two hours. It had been going on and off every minute all day. So could it be that even a small thing like a splitter could drop the signal level that much? By the way, the initial Cox tech who installed the phone service, also installed the splitter!!

It's just a little more involved than that when it comes to signal and splitters. A 2-way splitter for example causes 3.5db of signal loss per output so if the signal coming in is weak to begin with a splitter could cause enough loss for the devices connected to experience problems. Digital devices in particular are more sensitive to signal issues of this nature. The technician that comes out will check signal levels at various points in your home to determine where the most loss is occurring and how to work around it. Should weak signal be found at the tap servicing your residence he/she will open a ticket with our field maintenance team to troubleshoot further.

Thanks for the reply Chris. But it still astonishes me that the system still has problems like this in the first place after all the years of experience that Cox has now has in the phone business. One would think that the various problems that I read about on these forums and elsewhere could be easily solved or prevented. Why is your service still not as reliable as plain old copper wire telephone service from ATT?

We're fortunately to have an over 99% uptime in terms of phone reliability. I'm not sure when last a technician was out to troubleshoto the issues you're experiencing however it sounds like based on what you have described this should be an easy enough issue to get fixed for you.

Well, I am happy to report that everything is resolved and I apologize to Chris for my skepticism. Turns out the tech went through all the cable lines in the house and found a 20 year old connector in the attic that was sorely in need of replacement. Signals instantly went back to normal limits and everything is working properly. Word to the wise: if you live in a relatively old home with old cable lines, have the tech go through ALL of the wiring, like he did at my house. He might find problems you did not know that you had!

No problem, I'm just glad to hear the technician was able to fix the problem and end your frustration.
